子路去魯，謂顏淵曰：「何以贈我？」When Zi-lu was going away from Lu, he said to Yan Yuan, 'What have you to send me away with?'
曰：「吾聞之也：'I have heard,' was the reply,
去國，'that, when one is leaving his state,
則哭于墓而後行；he wails at the graves (of his fathers), and then takes his journey,
反其國， while on his return to it,
不哭， he does not wail,
展墓而入。」but goes to look at the graves, and (then) enters (the city).'
謂子路曰：「何以處我？」He then said to Zi-lu, 'And what have you to leave with me here?'
子路曰：「吾聞之也：'I have heard,' was the reply,
過墓則式，'that, when you pass by a grave, you should bow forward to the cross-bar,
過祀則下。」and, when you pass a place of sacrifice, you should dismount.'
