时人有桥玄者，A man of the time named Qiao Xuan
谓操曰： said to Cao Cao,
“天下将乱， "Rebellion is at hand,
非命世之才，不能济。 and only a man of the greatest ability can succeed in restoring tranquillity.
能安之者，其在君乎？” That man is yourself."
南阳何顒见操，言：And He Yong of Nanyang said of him,
“汉室将亡， "The dynasty of Han is about to fall.
安天下者，He who can restore peace
必此人也。” is this man and only he."
汝南许劭，有知人之名。操往见之，Cao Cao went to inquire his future of a wise man of Runan named Xu Shao.
问曰：“我何如人？”"What manner of man am I?" asked Cao Cao.
劭不答。The seer made no reply,
又问， and again and again Cao Cao pressed the question.
劭曰：Then Xu Shao replied,
“子治世之能臣， "In peace you are an able subject;
乱世之奸雄也。” in chaos you are a crafty hero!"
操闻言大喜。Cao Cao greatly rejoiced to hear this.
年二十，举孝廉，为郎，Cao Cao graduated at twenty and earned a reputation of piety and integrity.
除洛阳北都尉。 He began his career as Commanding Officer in a county within the Capital District.
初到任，即设五色棒十馀条于县之四门。In the four gates of the city he guarded, he hung up clubs of various sorts,
有犯禁者，不避豪贵，皆责之。 and he would punish any breach of the law whatever the rank of the offender.
中常侍蹇硕之叔，Now an uncle of Eunuch Jian Shuo
提刀夜行，was found one night in the streets with a sword
操巡夜拏住， and was arrested.
就棒责之。 In due course he was beaten.
由是，Thereafter
内外莫敢犯者， no one dared to offend again,
威名颇震。 and Cao Cao's name became heard.
后为顿丘令。 Soon he became a magistrate of Dunqiu.
因黄巾起，At the outbreak of the Yellow Scarves,
拜为骑都尉，Cao Cao held the rank of General
引马步军五千，and was given command of five thousand horse and foot
前来颍川助战。 to help fight at Yingchuan.
正值张梁、张宝败走，曹操拦住，大杀一阵， He just happened to fall in with the newly defeated rebels whom he cut to pieces.
斩首万馀级，Thousands were slain
夺得旗旛、金鼓马匹极多。and endless banners and drums and horses were captured, together with huge sums of money.
张梁、张宝死战得脱。However, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang got away;
操见过皇甫嵩，朱隽， and after an interview with Huangfu Song,
随即引兵追袭张梁、张宝去了。 Cao Cao went in pursuit of them.
