仲尼之畜狗死，The dog kept by Zhong-ni having died,
使子貢埋之， he employed Zi-gong to bury it,
曰： saying,
「吾聞之也：'I have heard
敝帷不棄， that a worn-out curtain should not be thrown away,
為埋馬也； but may be used to bury a horse in;
敝蓋不棄， and that a worn-out umbrella should not be thrown away,
為埋狗也。 but may be used to bury a dog in.
丘也貧，I am poor
無蓋；and have no umbrella.
於其封也， In putting the dog into the grave,
亦予之席， you can use my mat;
毋使其首陷焉。」 and do not let its head get buried in the earth.
路馬死， When one of the horses of the ruler's carriage dies,
埋之以帷。 it is buried in a curtain (in good condition).'
