君子曰：A superior man will say,
祭祀不祈， 'The object in sacrifices is not to pray;
不麾蚤， the time of them should not be hastened on;
不乐葆大， a great apparatus is not required at them;
不善嘉事， ornamental matters are not to be approved;
牲不及肥大， the victims need not be fat and large;
荐不美多品。 a profusion of the other offerings is not to be admired.'
孔子曰：“臧文仲安知礼！Confucius said, 'How can it be said that Zang Wen-zhong was acquainted with the rules of propriety?
夏父弗綦逆祀， When Xia Fu-Qi went right in the teeth of sacrificial order,
而弗止也。 he did not stop him,
燔柴于奥，夫奥者， (nor could he prevent) his burning a pile of firewood in sacrificing to the spirit of the furnace.
老妇之祭也， Now that sacrifice is paid to an old wife.
盛于盆， The materials for it might be contained in a tub,
尊于瓶。” and the vase is the (common) wine-jar.'
