天子玉藻，十有二旒，前后邃延，龙卷以祭。The son of Heaven, when sacrificing, wore (the cap) with the twelve long pendants of beads of jade hanging down from its top before and behind, and the robe embroidered with dragons.
玄端而朝日于东门之外，When saluting the appearance of the sun outside the eastern gate, he wore the dark-coloured square-cut robes;
听朔于南门之外， and (also) when listening to the notification of the first day of the month outside the southern gate.
闰月则阖门左扉，If the month were intercalary, he caused the left leaf of the door to be shut,
立于其中。 and stood in the middle of that (which remained open).
皮弁以日视朝， He wore the skin cap at the daily audience in the court,
遂以食， after which he proceeded to take the morning meal in it.
日中而餕， At midday he partook of what was left in the morning.
奏而食。 He had music at his meals.
日少牢， Every day a sheep and a pig were killed and cooked;
朔月大牢； and on the first day of the month an ox in addition.
五饮： There were five beverages:
上水、浆、酒、醴、酏。water, which was the principal; rice-water, spirits, must, and millet-water.
卒食， When he had done eating,
玄端而居。 he remained at ease in the dark-coloured square-cut robes.
动则左史书之， His actions were written down by the recorder of the Left,
言则右史书之， and his utterances by the recorder of the Right.
御瞽几声之上下。 The blind musician in attendance judged whether the music were too high or too low.
年不顺成， If the year were not good and fruitful,
则天子素服， the son of Heaven wore white and plain robes,
乘素车， rode in the Plain and unadorned carriage,
食无乐。 and had no music at his meals.
