《论语注疏》：「正义曰：此章记人立身成德之法也。」恐非。窃以为此祭祀仪式过程：从唱诗开始，合于仪礼，最后成于乐。
春秋以前，重大事件仪式中音乐为必不可少内容，特别是祭祀，可谓无乐不「成」，所以说「成于乐」。孔子又在《阳货》中云：「乐云乐云！钟鼓云乎哉？」可见乐的实质为礼服务，不在钟鼓等外衣中，充当礼之工具而已。礼才是主题、质。犹如红白事，奏乐渲染气分而已。若安「立身成德」之说，七十二徒皆应弹得一手好琴，否则岂非「不成」？《论语》还有「不学诗无以言，不学礼无以立」之语，却无「不学乐无以成」之说，非偶然也。圣人授徒，期以得官授职经世致用，立杆见影，有助于世道众生，与后儒修身养性意趣大相径庭。
