| Posted by: ciccotti (Jesse Ciccotti) | I'm working with Legge's 1865 publication of the Shangshu, page 283. The line in CText has: 惟天地萬物父母，惟人萬物之靈。但聰明，作元后，元后作民父母。
I wonder if the 但 should not be amended to 亶? This significantly changes the reading in Chinese, and confirms Legge's translation of it as "sincere." I have not seen any other editions that have 但. |
