用兵有言：「吾不敢为主而为客；不敢进寸而退尺。」
是谓行无行、攘无臂、扔无敌、执无兵。祸莫大于轻敌，
轻敌几丧吾宝。故抗兵相若，哀者胜矣。
对其中“攘无臂；扔无敌”似乎历来模糊：
王弼解：攘无臂，执无兵，扔无敌也，言无有与之抗也。
河上公解：虽欲大怒，若无臂可攘也。虽欲仍引之，若无敌可仍也。
皆模糊，特别对“攘无臂；扔无敌”没有具体训说。所以陈鼓应说：“这就是说，虽然有阵势，却像没有阵势可摆；虽然要奋臂，却像没有臂膀可举；虽然面临敌人，却像没有敌人可赴；虽然有兵器，却像没有兵器可持。”其中“没有臂膀可举”让人忍俊。之所以如此，窃以为因为《老子》一文追求文字整齐和修辞效果，难免以辞害义；又非一人所为，固难免矛盾。这个句式在《老子》中其它例子还有如二十五章：“大曰逝，逝曰远，远曰反”。“人法地，地法天，天法道，”等。这句正常语序应为：“无行行；无攘臂；无扔敌；无执兵”，即行无列队；不攘臂而怒；不扔敌；不执兵之意。 |
