发言者:justsojazz | Is 【知】meant in the sense of a "passive voice" here, i.e. "a person who is not known, but nevertheless is not angry…"? |

发言者:justsojazz | On second thought, translating 【知】 as "understood" would probably be more accurate than "known". Still, it seems to be in the passive voice – or is there another way of interpreting it? |

发言者:zifang (子方) | I would rather suggest that the 【人】 here should be understood as "other people", not the【君子】himself, and the real subject of the whole sentence is actually omitted! So there would be no need to comprehend this with a sense of passive voice. We should keep in mind that omissions of this and that are quite common in ancient Chinese.
Hope this will help you understand James Legge's translation better. |

发言者:american (言格林) | my understanding: If people don't know you/who you are, it doesn't bother you. Are you not still a man of virtue? |
