1 鄧晨:

Chen's great-grandfather Long was a military commissioner of Yangzhou, and his grandfather Xun was a military commissioner of Jiaozhi.

2 鄧晨:
晨與上共載出,逢使者不下車,使者怒,頗加恥辱。上稱江夏卒史,晨更名侯家丞。使者以其詐,將至亭,欲罪之,新野宰潘叔為請,得免。
Chen rode out with the emperor in the same carriage, but when they encountered an imperial envoy, he did not get off his carriage. The envoy became angry and greatly humiliated him. The emperor referred to the military commissioner of Jiangxia, and Chen changed his name to Houjiacheng. The envoy, suspecting him of deception, was about to take him to the pavilion and wanted to punish him. Xinye's local official Pan Shu pleaded on his behalf, and he was thus spared.

3 鄧晨:
鄧晨,南陽人,與上起兵,新野吏乃燒晨先祖祠堂,汙池室宅,焚其冢墓。宗族皆怒,曰:「家自富足,何故隨婦家入湯鑊中?」晨終無恨色。
Deng Chen, a native of Nanyang, joined the emperor in raising troops. As a result, local officials from Xinye burned down Deng's ancestral shrine and temple, as well as set fire to his family's tombs and residences. His clan members were all angry and said, "Our family is naturally wealthy enough; why should we follow our in-laws into the cauldron of suffering?" Chen remained without a trace of resentment.

4 鄧晨:
光武微時與鄧晨觀讖,云「劉秀當為天子」。或言「國師公劉秀當之」。光武曰:「安知非僕乎?」建武三年,上徵鄧晨還京師,數讌見,說故舊平生為忻樂。晨從容謂帝曰:「僕竟辨之。」帝大笑。
When Guangwu was still obscure, he and Deng Chen observed an omen, which stated, "Liu Xiu will become emperor." Some said, "The National Master Duke Liu Xiu is the one who should hold it." Guangwu said, "How do you know it's not me?" In the third year of Jianwu (37 AD), the emperor summoned Deng Chen back to the capital, where he frequently hosted banquets and meetings. He was delighted by reminiscing about old friends and past experiences. Chen calmly told the emperor, "I finally recognized it." The emperor laughed heartily.

5 鄧晨:
鄧晨為陳留郡,興鴻郤陂,益地數千頃,溉郡稻,常以豐熟,兼流給他郡。
Deng Chen served in Chenliu Commandery, where he constructed the Hongxi Polder. This project added several thousand mu of land and irrigated rice fields in the commandery. The harvest was consistently bountiful, with surplus water also benefiting other commanderies.
