樂恢，字伯奇，父親，為縣吏，有罪，令欲殺之。恢年十一，常伏寺東門外凍地，晝夜啼泣，令乃出親。 |
| | Yue Hui, courtesy name Boqi, his father was a county official, who committed a crime; the county magistrate wanted to kill him. At the age of eleven, Hui often knelt outside the eastern gate of the temple on frozen ground, weeping day and night; thus the magistrate finally released his father.

| | Jingzhao Yin Zhang Xun summoned Hui and appointed him as a clerk in charge of household affairs.

竇憲出征匈奴，恢上書諫曰：「春秋之義，王者不理夷狄。得其地不可墾發，得其人無益於政，故明王之於夷狄，羇縻而已。孔子曰：『遠人不服，則修文德以來之。』以漢之盛，不務修舜、禹、周公之德，而無故興干戈，動兵革，以求無用之物，臣誠惑之！」 |
| | Dou Xian was leading an expedition against the Xiongnu, and Hui submitted a memorial to advise him, saying: "According to the principles of Spring and Autumn Annals, a Son of Heaven should not personally deal with the Yi and Di." Even if we obtain their land, it cannot be cultivated; even if we capture their people, they are of no benefit to governance. Therefore, enlightened kings treat the Yi and Di merely by keeping them loosely under control." Confucius said: "If distant people do not submit, then cultivate cultural virtue to bring them in." "At the height of Han's power, we do not strive to cultivate the virtue of Shun, Yu, and Zhou Gong, yet without cause raise arms and stir up military campaigns, seeking useless things—this truly puzzles me!"
