Zhi Yun, courtesy name Junzhang, submitted a memorial to Wang Mang, advising him to assume the position of a subject. Wang Mang was very angry and immediately arrested Zhi Yun. They did not kill him yet, but sent a Yellow Gate official to intimidate and persuade Zhi Yun, making him pretend to be mad and delirious, unaware of what he was saying. Zhi Yun said: "What I have spoken are all matters of astronomy; they were not fabricated by a madman."

Zhi Yun's friend Dong Zizhang's father and uncle were victims of the Sheng clan in their hometown. As Zizhang lay ill and near death, Zhi Yun went to visit him. Zizhang looked at Zhi Yun, sobbing but unable to speak. Zhi Yun said: "

I know you are not grieving over the length of your life decreed by Heaven, but rather lamenting that the vengeance for your two fathers has not been taken." Zizhang could only look on in silence. Zhi Yun immediately led his guests to ambush the enemies, took their heads and showed them to Zizhang. Zizhang was pleased, and thus breathed his last. Zhi Yun reported himself to the county magistrate, submitting a report of what had happened. The magistrate responded slowly and hurriedly went out to visit the prison. The magistrate ran barefoot to pursue him, but failed to catch up. He then entered the prison himself to apologize to Zhi Yun and drew a knife toward his own throat as a pledge to Zhi Yun, saying: "If you do not follow me out, how dare I not die in order to prove my sincerity!" Zhi Yun then left.

Ouyang Xi, the Tai Shou of Ruhnan, summoned Zhi Yun to serve as Gongcao. In Ruhnan's old custom, in the tenth month there was a banquet, and people within one hundred li all brought cattle and wine to the governor's office for drinking and feasting. At that time, after the banquet was over, Ouyang Xi said: "Yao Yan, the postal supervisor of the western region, is by nature loyal and upright; he governs effectively without harshness. Now I will discuss Yao Yan's achievements with the learned men together and recommend him to the court." Zhi Yun, sitting in a lower seat, suddenly stepped forward and said solemnly: "According to my investigation, Yao Yan is by nature greedy and wicked. He appears upright on the outside but is round and scheming within; he forms factions and commits corruption, deceiving superiors and harming the people. You, Sir, regard evil as good, and follow crookedness instead of uprightness; this means you have neither loyalty to the ruler nor integrity in your subordinates. Zhi Yun dares to present a cup." Ouyang Xi's face turned ashamed, and he did not know what to do. Zhang Jing, the assistant official in charge of the gate, stepped forward and said: "A wise ruler has upright ministers. Gongcao's words are sincere; this is a virtue of you, Sir." Ouyang Xi was somewhat appeased and said: "Indeed it is my fault."

Zhi Yun, courtesy name Junzhhang, was a native of Runan. Zheng Cidou took refuge in the Yiyang Mountains. Zhi Yun left immediately and followed Cidou to stay, enjoying fishing and angling greatly, remaining there for several dozen days. Zhi Yun sighed and said: "Heaven produces outstanding men for the sake of the people. Birds and beasts cannot be grouped together; will you follow me to become a Yi Yin?" Or shall we abandon Yao and Shun, just as Xu and Chao did?" Cidou said: "I am already old; how can I follow you? Strive to uphold the principles of life and nature, and do not exhaust your spirit to harm your health." They bid farewell and departed. Zhi Yun stayed as a guest in Jiangxia, where the commandery recommended him as an Xiaolian and he became a Lang official.

Zhi Yun served as the gate warden of Shangdong Chengmen. The emperor once went out at night and returned, but the gates were closed. The imperial decree ordered to open the gate for him to enter, but Zhi Yun refused to admit him. The emperor ordered that he be allowed to pass by recognizing his face through the gate opening. Zhi Yun said: "The firelight is too dim and distant." Zhi Yun thus refused to open the gate. The next day, Zhi Yun submitted a memorial saying: "In ancient times, King Wen did not dare to indulge in hunting and leisure, because he was always concerned about the people. But Your Majesty hunts far into the mountains and forests, continuing through the night, what will become of the state and ancestral temples?" This is indeed a matter I secretly worry about as a humble subject." Because of this, the emperor especially valued him.

Zhi Yun served as governor of Changsha. In Changsha, there was a righteous man named Gu Chu, who had suffered the death of his father but had not yet buried him when a fire broke out and reached Gu Chu's house. The coffin could not be moved, so Gu Chu braved the flames and lay on top of the coffin; just as he did, the fire was extinguished.

Because the former governor of Changsha, Zhang Jin, had accepted bribes amounting to tens of thousands, and Zhi Yun did not investigate or impeach him, he was therefore demoted to serve as magistrate of Mangchang.

The magistrates and assistants in Mangchang, Han Gong, had accepted money from the notorious bandit Ding Zhong, shielded him, and ordered 800 lashes. When this failed to kill him, he entered to see Zhi Yun and claimed that Ding Zhong was strong and healthy. Zhi Yun became angry and used the iron rod with which the punishment had been carried out to beat Han Gong. Han Gong, resentful upon leaving, killed Ding Zhong; as a result, Zhi Yun was consequently dismissed from office.
