| | In the eighth year [of his reign], in spring, Lord Jin sent Han Chuan to make a statement about the farmland of Wenyang, returning it to Qi. What does "lai yan" mean? It is an internal statement, meaning they coerced us to return it. Why did they coerce me to return it? At the Battle of An, the army of Qi suffered a great defeat. King Qi returned and mourned the dead while tending to the sick; for seven years he did not drink alcohol or eat meat. Lord Jin heard about it and said, "Hmph! How could we make a ruler of another state abstain from drinking alcohol or eating meat for seven years? Let us return all the territories that have been unjustly taken."
