| | In the eighth year [of his reign], spring, the first month, on the Jimao day, there was a sacrificial offering of steam-cooked food (zheng). What is "zheng"? It is a winter sacrifice. In spring it is called "ci," in summer "yue," in autumn "chang," and in winter "zheng." Ordinary matters are not recorded; why then is this recorded? To criticize. What is being criticized? It criticizes haste. Haste leads to irreverence, and irreverence leads to a lack of respect. The sacrifice offered by a gentleman is respectful but not irreverent. Neglect leads to carelessness, and carelessness leads to forgetfulness. If a scholar does not attain these four principles, then in winter he will have no fur garments, and in summer no hemp clothing.

| | In winter, the tenth month, it rained snow. Why is this recorded? It records an unusual occurrence. What makes it unusual? Because it is out of season.
|
| | Jia Gong came, and thus escorted the Queen from Ji. Who is Jia Gong? He was one of the Three Dukes of the Son of Heaven. Why is he not referred to as an envoy? Because in marriage rites, the host is not mentioned. What does "sui" mean? It means to initiate an action. Ministers do not initiate actions on their own; then why is the word "sui" used here? It indicates that he acted as an envoy for me. How did he act as an envoy for me? If I were to serve as a matchmaker, then it would be appropriate to send someone along to escort her. When a woman is in her own state, she is referred to as "nü"; why here is she called the Queen? To the Son of Heaven there are no outsiders; thus, the terminology is complete.
