| | In the second year, spring, on the Wushen day of the first lunar month, Song Du murdered his ruler Yu Yi and his minister Kong Fu. What is "ji"? It means accumulation. There have been many cases of regicide; is there no one else who did not involve others? It was said: Yes, Qiumu and Xunxi were also involved. Are there no others who did not involve others besides Qiumu and Xun Xi? It was said: Yes. If so, why is this recorded here? Because they were virtuous. What virtue did Kong Fu have? Kong Fu can be said to have shown righteousness in his expression. How did he show righteousness in his expression? Song Du was about to kill Shanggong. If Kong Fu had been alive and present, then Shanggong could not have been killed, so Song Du first attacked Kong Fu's family at that time. When Shanggong learned of Kong Fu's death, he knew that he himself would surely die as well, so he hurried to rescue him; both died. Kong Fu maintained a dignified and upright demeanor in court, so no one dared to act recklessly or bring trouble upon his ruler. Therefore, Kong Fu can be said to have demonstrated righteousness through his expression.

| | The ruler of Teng came to pay homage. In the third month, Duke Gong met with Duke Qi, Marquis Chen, and Duke Zheng at Ji in order to resolve the chaos in Song. The court conceals great evils; then why is this explicitly mentioned here? Because it was distant. Different expressions are used for what is seen, what is heard, and what is transmitted by hearsay. Yin was also distant; why then was it concealed? Because Yin was virtuous and Huan was lowly.

| | In summer, in the fourth month, a large tripod of Gao was taken from Song. This tripod was taken from Song; why is it called the Gao Tripod? Vessels follow their names, and places follow their owners. Why do vessels follow their names? Why do places follow their owners? Vessels and people are not inherently connected. Song originally obtained it through unjust means, so it is called the Gao Tripod; As for places and people, this is not the case—suddenly they can become someone's possession. If so, then does taking something make it one's own? It was said: No. What is the reason? Like the concubine of King Chu, there is no time when it can be considered legitimate.

| | On the Wushen day, it was enshrined in the Grand Ancestral Temple. Why is this recorded? It is a censure. What exactly is being criticized? To follow disorder, accept bribes, and enshrine them in the Grand Ancestral Temple is against ritual propriety.

| | In autumn, in the seventh month, Marquis Ji came to pay homage. Duke Cai and Duke Zheng met at Deng. Normally, when states are separated, the word "meeting" is not used; then why is it mentioned here? It was probably because Deng and the meeting were involved.
