This was a ruler who had not yet completed his mourning period; why is he referred to as the "heir apparent"? Because Duke Ling of Cai did not act like a ruler, his son could not be recognized. If Duke Ling did not act as a ruler, then why was his son not recognized? When the son of a deposed ruler is executed and not installed, it is not out of anger but because there is no one to succeed. Where was he used [as a sacrifice]? He was sacrificed at Fang. How was he sacrificed at Fang? It is likely that his body was used to build a defense.
