| | Shusun Bao met with Jin Zhao Wu, Chu Gongzi Wei, Qi Guo Zuo, Song Xiang Xu, Wei Shi E, Chen Gongzi Zhao, Cai Gongsun Guisheng, Zheng Xuan Hu, Xu people, and Cao people at Hua. This was Duke Chen's younger brother Zhao; why is he not referred to as "younger brother"? He was degraded. Why was he degraded? He was degraded for killing the crown prince Yanshi. It is recorded as: "Prince Zhao, younger brother of Duke Chen, killed Crown Prince Yanshi of Chen." When ministers kill each other, they are referred to by their names. Why is he here mentioned by name and clan for the killing? It indicates that he was about to personally commit regicide. Now, since he is the one who will do it himself, why is the wording the same as for someone who actually commits regicide? A son of the king or a close relative must not plot rebellion; if they do, they will certainly be punished. If that is so, then why was he degraded not at the time of his regicide? When a close relative commits regicide, the crime is especially grave. In the "Spring and Autumn Annals," when the guilt and wickedness are evident without needing to record degradation or severance, it does not do so in order to highlight the severity of the crime. When a person is degraded and severed from their position but their guilt and wickedness are still evident, they are recorded as degraded and severed to demonstrate the severity of their crime. Now that Zhao's crime is already serious, why is he again degraded here? It emphasizes that Zhao was indeed guilty. How is Zhao's guilt emphasized? It indicates that Chu used the pretext of punishing Zhao to annihilate Chen.

| | In summer, Duke Qin's younger brother Zhen fled to Jin. Qin had no ministers; why is this recorded? Because he took office in Jin. Why did he take office in Jin? Possessing a state with a thousand chariots, yet unable to accommodate his maternal younger brother; therefore, the gentlemen call it "fleeing into exile."

| | Jin Xun Wu led his army and defeated the Di people at Dayuan. This was Dalu; why is it called Dayuan? The names of places and things follow the Chinese usage, while the names of fiefs and people follow their masters. What is Yuan? A high-level flat area is called Yuan, and a low-level flat area is called Xi.

| | In autumn, Ju Quji returned from Qi to Ju. Ju Chuan fled to Wu. Shu Gong led his army to demarcate the fields of Yun. What does "demarcating the fields of Yun" mean? It means establishing a boundary with Ju. If it was merely about setting a boundary with Ju, then why did he lead his army there? Because they feared Ju.
