| | In autumn, seventh month, the Qi people surrendered Zhang. What is Zhang? It was a former fief of Ji. What does "surrendered it" mean? It means they captured it. If they captured it, then why is it not said that they took it? It was to avoid mentioning the disgrace of Duke Huan. Capturing a fief from outside is not recorded; then why is this recorded? Because it was completely captured.

齊人伐山戎。此齊侯也，其稱人何？貶。曷為貶？子司馬子曰：「蓋以操之為已蹙以矣！」此蓋戰也，何以不言戰？《春秋》敵者言戰，桓公之與戎狄，驅之爾。 |
| | The people of Qi attacked Shanrong. This was Duke Qi; why is he referred to as "the people of Qi"? It is a demotion in status. Why was it demoted? Master Sishi said: "It is probably because Cao had already been reduced!" This was presumably a battle; then why isn't it stated that there was a battle? The "Spring and Autumn Annals" mentions battles only when the opponents are of equal status; Duke Huan's dealings with the Rong and Di were merely driving them away.
