| | On the Gyu day of the sixth month, Ji Sun Xingfu, Zang Sun Xu, Shu Sun Qiuru, and Gong Sun Yingqi led their troops to join Jin Xi Ke, Wei Sun Liangfu, Cao Gongzi Shou, and engage in battle with Duke Qi at An. The Qi army suffered a crushing defeat. On that day, some said it was the day of the battle, others said it was the day when everything ended. Cao had no marquises; then why is he called Gongzi? Because four of our great marquises were present, the most noble among them was mentioned.

秋，七月，齊侯使國佐如師。己酉，及國佐盟於爰婁。鞍去國五百里，爰婁去國五十里。壹戰綿地五百里，焚雍門之茨，侵車東至海。君子聞之，曰：「夫甚，甚之辭焉，齊有以取之也。」齊之有以取之何也？敗衛師於新築，侵我北鄙，敖郤獻子，齊有以取之也。爰婁在師之外。郤克曰：「反魯、衛之侵地，以紀侯之甗來，以蕭同侄子之母為質，使耕者皆東其畝，然後與子盟。」國佐曰：「反魯、衛之侵地，以紀侯之甗來，則諾。以蕭同侄子之母為質，則是齊侯之母也，齊侯之母猶晉君之母也，晉君之母猶齊侯之母也，使耕者盡東其畝，則是終土齊也：不可！請壹戰，壹戰不克，請再，再不克，請三，三不克，請四，四不克，請五，五不克，舉國而授！」於是而與之盟。 |
| | In autumn, on the first day of the seventh month, Duke Qi sent Guo Zhao to the allied forces. On the Jiyou day, an alliance was made with Guo Zhao at Yuanlou. An is five hundred li away from the state of Guo, and Yuanlou is fifty li away from Guo. A single battle stretched over five hundred li of land; they burned the thatched roofs at Yongmen and invaded eastward to the sea. When gentlemen heard about it, they said: "That was indeed severe; such strong words indicate that Qi had reason to suffer this." What did Qi have that led to its suffering? Because they defeated the Wei army at Xinzhù, invaded our northern frontier, and insulted Xi Xianzi, Qi had reason to suffer this. Yuanlou was outside the allied forces' territory. Xi Ke said: "Return the invaded territories of Lu and Wei, bring back Duke Ji's yanyan, take Xiao Tong Zhizi's mother as a hostage, make all farmers plow their fields eastward, and then I will conclude an alliance with you." Guo Zhao said: "Returning the invaded territories of Lu and Wei and bringing back Duke Ji's yanyen, I agree." "As for taking Xiao Tong Zhizi's mother as hostage, she is the mother of Duke Qi. The mother of Duke Qi is like the mother of the Jin ruler; the mother of the Jin ruler is also like the mother of Duke Qi. Making all farmers plow eastward would mean permanently turning our land over to Qi: this cannot be accepted!" "I request one battle; if we do not win the first, I will request a second. If we still fail to win the second, I shall request a third, then a fourth, and finally a fifth. If after five battles we have still failed, then I shall surrender our entire country!" Thus an alliance was concluded with them.

十有一月，公會楚公子嬰齊於蜀。楚無大夫，其曰公子何也？嬰齊亢也。丙申，公及楚人、秦人、宋人、陳人、衛人、鄭人、齊人、曹人、邾人、薛人、繒人盟於蜀。楚其稱人何也？於是而後公得其所也。會與盟同月，則地會不地盟；不同月，則地會地盟。此其地會地盟何也？以公得其所，申其事也。今之屈，向之驕也。 |
| | On the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the Duke met Gongzi Yingqi of Chu at Shu. Chu had no marquises; why then is he called "Gongzi"? Yingqi was a high-ranking official. On the Bingshen day, the Duke and the people of Chu, Qin, Song, Chen, Wei, Zheng, Qi, Cao, Zhu, Xue, and Zeng concluded an alliance at Shu. Why is "Chu" referred to as "people of Chu"? Only after this did the Duke find his rightful place. If a meeting and an alliance take place in the same month, then only the location of the meeting is recorded, not that of the alliance; if they occur in different months, then both the locations of the meeting and the alliance are recorded. Why is the location for both the meeting and the alliance recorded here? Because the Duke found his rightful place, this event is emphasized. What is now humble was previously arrogant.
