夏，公會齊侯於頰谷。公至自頰谷。離會不致，何為致也？危之也。危之，則以地致何也？為危之也。其危奈何？曰頰谷之會，孔子相焉。兩君就壇，兩相相揖。齊人鼓噪而起，欲以執魯君。孔子歷階而上，不盡一等，而視歸乎齊侯，曰：「兩君合好，夷狄之民何為來？」為命司馬止之。齊侯逡巡而謝曰：「寡人之過也。」退而屬其二三大夫曰：「夫人率其君與之行古人之道，二三子獨率我而入夷狄之俗，何為？」罷會，齊人使優施舞於魯君之幕下。孔子曰：「笑君者罪當死！」使司馬行法焉，首足異門而出。齊人來歸鄆、言雚、龜、陰之田者，蓋為此也。因是以見雖有文事，必在武備，孔子於頰谷之會見之矣。晉趙鞅帥師圍衛。齊人來歸鄆、言雚、龜、陰之田叔孫州仇、仲孫何忌帥師圍郈。 |
| | In summer, the Gong met with Duke of Qi at Jiagu. The Gong returned from Jiagu. If the meeting was not held, why is it recorded as having taken place? It indicates danger. If danger is indicated, then why record the place of return? To indicate that there was danger. What was the nature of this danger? It is said that at the Jiagu meeting, Confucius served as an assistant. The two rulers approached the altar, and their assistants bowed to each other. The Qi people shouted and rose up, intending to seize the ruler of Lu. Confucius ascended the steps one by one, not yet reaching the top step, when he looked back at Duke of Qi and said: "The two rulers have come together in harmony; what business do the people of Yi and Di have coming here?" He ordered the Sima to stop them. Duke of Qi hesitated and apologized, saying: "It was my fault." Afterward, he turned to his two or three senior ministers and said: "That person led his ruler in following the ways of ancient people, yet you two or three have alone led me into the customs of Yi and Di. Why is that?" After the meeting was ended, the people of Qi sent You Shi to perform a dance in the tent of the ruler of Lu. Confucius said: "He who dares to mock the ruler deserves death!" He ordered the Sima to carry out the law, and the criminal's head and feet were taken out through different gates. The people of Qi returned the fields of Yun, Yanguan, Gui, and Yin; this was probably for that reason. Because of this we see that even when there is a cultural or diplomatic affair, military preparedness must be present; Confucius witnessed this at the Jiagu meeting. Jin Zhao Mang led his troops to besiege Wei. The people of Qi returned the lands of Yun, Yanguan,Gui and Yin. Shu Sun Zhou Chou and Zhong Sun He Ji led their troops to besiege Hou.
