| | In autumn, on the Renwu day of the eighth month, a grand military inspection was held. What is a "da yue"? It refers to an inspection of war chariots. To cultivate instruction and clearly convey orders is the way of a nation. Maintaining peace while preparing for military affairs is not proper. On that day, it was considered a promotion of martial valor; therefore, the date was carefully recorded, probably to observe the women. The people of Cai killed Chen Tuo. Chen Tuo was the ruler of Chen. Why is he called Chen Tuo? Because his actions were those of a common man, so he was referred to as such. What were the actions of this common man? Duke Chen enjoyed hunting and excessively hunted in Cai, competing with the people of Cai for game. The people of Cai did not know he was the ruler of Chen, so they killed him. How could they have known he was the ruler of Chen? Mutual killing between both sides is against morality. The reason it was not mentioned with a place name is because the event took place in Cai.
