| | In the thirty-first year [of his reign], spring, he took the fields to the west of Ji. Gongzi Sui went to Jin. In summer, the fourth month, they divined four times about holding a suburban sacrifice, but it was not approved; thus, they released the sacrificial animals, yet still made three offerings to distant deities. In summer, fourth month — this was not in accordance with the proper time. Divining four times was against ritual propriety. When releasing the sacrificial animals, they were dressed in black upper garments and fragrant lower robes; officials in dark ceremonial attire would accompany them to the southern suburbs — this was also done for the oxen. The word "nai" is an expression of loss or absence from a person's perspective. "The term 'you' indicates that something could have been stopped or ceased."
