| | In winter, on the Renwu day of the eleventh lunar month, the Duke's younger brother, Shuxi, died. The text refers to him as "the Duke's younger brother Shuxi." This is a way of showing respect for him. Why is he shown respect? Because Duke Xuan was assassinated, and this action is condemned. If it were condemned, then why did he not leave? It is said that they were brothers. Why should he leave and go elsewhere, or give him wealth, when it could be said: "I am sufficient already." He wove clogs to eat with, and for his entire life did not consume food from Duke Xuan. The gentlemen regarded this as a demonstration of filial piety, thus earning respect in the Spring and Autumn Annals.
