| | In the eighth year, spring, the first month of the king (i.e., the lunar new year), the army was stationed at Lang, waiting for the people of Chen and Cai. Ci means to stop or halt. Si means to wait or await. On the Jiawu day, military preparations were made. "Chu yue zhibing," which means to prepare troops, refers to practicing for battle. "On returning, it is called Zhenlv," also meaning to practice for battle. Although military preparations were made, the people of Chen and Cai did not arrive. Military affairs ended with strict discipline; therefore it is said: "A good general who arranges his troops well does not need to fight"—this is what that means. A good ruler of a state does not need an army; a good general with an army does not need to form battle formations; a good commander who forms battle formations does not have to fight; a skilled warrior in battle will not die; and one who is skillful at dying will not be defeated.

| | In summer, the army joined with the Qi army to besiege Cheng. Cheng surrendered to the Qi army. Why is it said that "it surrendered to the Qi army"? لون It was to prevent the Qi army from imposing its authority upon Chengfu.

秋,師還。還者,事未畢也,遁也。 |
| | In autumn, the army returned. Returning means that the matter was not completed—it indicates a retreat.

冬,十有一月癸未,齊無知弒其君諸兒。大夫弒其君以國氏者,嫌也,弒而代之也。 |
| | In winter, on the Kuwei day of the eleventh month (December 18, 685 BC), Qi Wuzhi assassinated his ruler Zhu er. When a high minister assassinates his lord and uses the state's name, it indicates suspicion—that is, he assassinated him and took over in his place.
