| | In spring of the seventeenth year, the Qi people arrested Zheng Zhan. The term "ren" refers to a collective designation for many words. To arrest someone as "a person" is to assign them a label or designation. Zheng Zhan was an inferior figure from the State of Zheng. Inferior figures are not recorded, so why is this one recorded? It is because he fled and thus his actions are recorded. If one flees, why should their actions be recorded at all? Because there is an implication in the later events, it becomes necessary to record its origin. Zheng Zhan was a sycophant from the State of Zheng.

| | In summer, the Qi forces were annihilated at Sui. The term "jian" means to be completely destroyed or wiped out. If that is the case, then why not say that the people of Sui completely annihilated the Qi people? Because there was no designation for "Sui." If there is no Sui, then why mention it at all? It implies that the place of Sui still exists. How can we know that Sui still exists? It is said that the Qi people destroyed Sui and sent troops to garrison it. The descendants of Yin in Sui poisoned and killed those who were stationed there, and thus the Qi forces were annihilated. This is what is meant by underestimating one's enemy.
