是故与其有天下也,不若有说也;与其有说也,不若尚羊物之终始也;而条达有无之际。是故举世而誉之不加劝,举世而非之不加沮,定于死生之境,而通于荣辱之理。虽有炎火洪水弥靡于天下,神无亏缺于胸臆之中矣。若然者,视天下之间,犹飞羽浮芥也。孰肯分分然以物为事也!水之性真清,而土汩之;人性安静,而嗜欲乱之。夫人之所受于天者,耳目之于声色也,口鼻之于芳臭也,肌肤之于寒燠,其情一也;或通于神明,或不免于痴狂者,何也?其所为制者异也。是故神者智之渊也,渊清则明矣;智者心之府也,智公则心平矣。人莫鉴于流沫,而鉴于止水者,以其静也;莫窥形于生铁,而窥于明镜者,以睹其易也。夫唯易且静,形物之性也。由此观之,用也必假之于弗用也。是故虚室生白,吉祥止也。夫鉴明者,尘垢弗能霾;神清者,嗜欲弗能乱。精神已越于外,而事复返之,是失之于本,而求之于末也。外内无符而欲与物接,弊其元光,而求知之于耳目,是释其昭昭,而道其冥冥也,是之谓失道。心有所至,而神喟然在之,反之于虚,则消铄灭息,此圣人之游也。故古之治天下也,必达乎性命之情。其举错未必同也,其合于道一也。
