故明主制禮義而為衣,分節行而為帶。衣足以覆形,從典墳,虛循撓,便身體,適行步,不務於奇麗之容,隅眥之削;帶足以結紐收衽,束牢連固,不亟於為文句疏短之尭。故制禮義,行至德,而不拘於儒、墨。所謂明者,非謂其見彼也,自見而已;所謂聰者,非謂聞彼也,自聞而已;所謂達者,非謂知彼也,自知而已。是故身者,道之所托,身得則道得矣。道之得也,以視則明,以聽則聰,以言則公,以行則從。故聖人裁財制物也,猶工匠之斫削鑿枘也,宰庖之切割分別也。曲得其宜而不折傷。拙工則不然,大則塞而不入,小則窕而不周。動于心,枝於手,而愈醜。夫聖人之斫削物也,剖之判之,離之散之;已淫已失,複揆以一;既出其根,複歸其門;已雕已琢,還反于樸。合而為道德,離而為儀錶。其轉入玄冥,其散應無形。禮儀節行,又何以窮至治之本哉?世之明事者,多離道德之本,曰:「禮義足以治天下。」此未可與言術也。
