故仁義者,治之本也。今不知事修其本,而務沼其末,是釋其根而灌其枝也。且法之生也,以輔仁義,今重法而棄義,是貴其冠履而忘其頭足也。故仁義者,為厚基者也。不益其厚而張其廣者毀,不廣其基而增其高者覆。趙政不增其德而累其高,故滅;智伯不行仁義而務廣地,故亡其國。語曰:不大其棟,不能任重。重莫若國,棟莫若德。國主之有民也,猶城之有基,木之有根。根深則本固,基美則上寧。五帝三王之道,天下之綱紀,治之儀錶也。。非治之大本,事之恒常,可博聞而世傳者也。子囊北而全楚,北不可以為庸;弦高誕而存鄭,誕不可以為常。今夫《雅》、《》之聲,皆發於詞,本於情,故君臣以睦,父子以親,故《韶》、《夏》之樂也,聲浸乎金石,潤乎草木。今取怨思之聲,施之于弦管,聞其音者,不淫則悲,淫則亂男女之辨,悲則感怨思之氣。豈所謂樂哉!
