The Yellow Emperor, during a quiet time at court, dismissed his attendants and asked 岐伯(Qi Bo) thus: "I have already heard of the nine kinds of acupuncture needles, discussed yin-yang principles in their proper order, and completed my study of the six meridians. I now wish to ask you some questions orally." Qi Bo rose from his seat, bowed twice, and said: "What a good question! This is what was orally transmitted by my predecessors." The Yellow Emperor said: "I wish to hear the oral transmission." Qi Bo replied: "All kinds of diseases originate from exposure to wind, rain, cold and heat, imbalances in yin and yang, emotions such as joy and anger, diet and living conditions, as well as sudden fright or terror." Then the vital energy and blood separate, yin and yang become disrupted, the meridians and collaterals are cut off, the channels of qi circulation become blocked, yin and yang oppose each other, defensive qi lingers in stagnation, the meridian vessels become empty and deficient, and the flow of blood and qi becomes disordered, thus losing its normal state. Regarding theories not found within the classical texts, I shall now explain their methods.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person yawns, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo replied: "Defensive qi travels through the yang meridians during the day, and at midnight it moves into the yin meridians. Yin governs the night, and during the night one lies down to sleep; Yang governs the upper part of the body, while yin governs the lower part; thus yin qi accumulates below, while yang qi has not yet dissipated. Yang pulls upward, and yin pulls downward; the mutual attraction between yin and yang causes frequent yawning." When yang qi is exhausted and yin qi becomes dominant, the eyes close and one falls asleep; when yin qi is depleted and yang qi prevails again, one awakens. Drain the Foot Shaoyin meridian, and tonify the Foot Taiyang meridian.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person sighs, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "Grains enter the stomach, and the stomach's qi ascends to nourish the lungs. Now, if old cold pathogenic qi and new grain qi both return to the stomach together, they become confused with each other. Genuine and pathological qi attack one another; their opposing forces reverse upward again from the stomach, thus causing sighing." Tonify the Hand Taiyin meridian, drain the Foot Shaoyin meridian.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person shivers or chatters their teeth, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "This occurs when yin qi is excessive and yang qi is deficient. Yin moves quickly while yang progresses slowly; when yin becomes overly dominant and yang is nearly exhausted, it results in shivering or teeth-chattering." Tonify the Foot Taiyang meridian, drain the Foot Shaayin meridian.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person experiences chills and shivering, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "Cold pathogenic qi lodges in the skin; yin is excessive while yang is deficient, hence chills and trembling occur. Tonify all yang meridians."

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person belches, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "Cold pathogenic qi lodges within the stomach, causing reversal and upward dispersion from below. It then emerges again from the stomach, hence resulting in belching." Tonify both the Foot Taiyin and Foot Yangming meridians; another method says to tonify at the root of the eyebrows.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person sneezes, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "When yang qi is harmonious and smooth, it fills the heart and emerges through the nose, thus causing a sneeze." Tonify the Foot Taiyang at the collateral of the root of the eyebrows; another says it is above the eyebrows.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person drools, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "If the stomach is not solid and strong, all meridians become deficient; when the meridians are deficient, sinews and vessels become slack and sluggish; when the sinews and vessels are slack and sluggish, excessive exertion in yin activities causes qi to be unable to recover, thus resulting in drooling." According to its location, tonify between the muscle layers.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person grieves and weeps with tears streaming down, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "The heart is the sovereign of the five zang and six fu organs; the eyes are where the great vessels converge, and they serve as the pathway for bodily fluids to ascend. The mouth and nose are the gates through which qi enters and exits. Therefore, when one experiences sorrow, grief, or worry, the heart is affected; when the heart is disturbed, all five zang and six fu organs are agitated. When they are agitated, the great vessels respond, and when the great vessels respond, the fluid pathways open. Once these pathways open, tears and nasal discharge flow out." Body fluids are what nourish the essence and moisten the hollow orifices. Therefore, when the pathways for ascending fluids open, tears flow; if weeping does not cease, body fluids will be depleted; when body fluids are exhausted, essence cannot nourish the eyes, and when essence fails to nourish them, vision is lost. This condition is called "loss of essence." Tonify at Tianzhu (BL10) and the collateral near the neck.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person takes deep sighs or long breaths, what kind of qi causes such behavior?" Qi Bo said: "When one is troubled by worries and thoughts, the heart's connecting vessels become tense. When these vessels are taut, the qi pathways constrict; when they constrict, the flow becomes obstructed. Therefore, deep sighing occurs to release it outward. Tonify the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot Shaoyang meridians to retain and regulate this condition."

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person drools involuntarily, what kind of qi causes it?" Qi Bo said: "Food and drink all enter the stomach. When there is heat in the stomach, intestinal worms become active; when these worms are active, the stomach becomes relaxed; when the stomach relaxes, the Lianquan (the orifice controlling saliva) opens, hence causing drooling. Tonify the Foot Shaoyin meridian."

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person experiences ringing in the ears, what kind of qi causes this?" Qi Bo said: "The ears are where the great vessels congregate. Therefore, when the stomach is empty, these major vessels become deficient; when they are deficient, qi and blood descend downward. When the vessels are exhausted in this way, ringing occurs in the ears. Tonify at Kezhuoren (TE21), which is located at the junction of the flesh and nail bed on the thumb of the hand."

The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a person bites their own tongue, what kind of qi causes this?" This is caused by reversal and upward movement of qi, with the meridian energies arriving in disorder. When Shaoyin qi arrives, it causes biting of the tongue; when Shaoyang qi arrives, it leads to biting of the cheek; and when Yangming qi arrives, it results in biting of the lips. Identify which meridian is responsible for the condition, and tonify accordingly.

All these twelve pathogenic influences are abnormal qi that invade the body's hollow orifices. Therefore, wherever such pathogenic factors reside, there is a deficiency in the body. Thus, when yang qi above is insufficient, the brain becomes inadequately nourished, leading to ringing in the ears; the head feels as if it might tilt forward, and the eyes experience dizziness. When central qi is insufficient, urination and defecation become abnormal, and the intestines produce gurgling sounds. When the lower jiao qi is insufficient, it may lead to atrophy, cold extremities, and a feeling of mental distress in the heart. Tonify below the outer malleolus of the foot and retain the qi there.

The Yellow Emperor asked: "How should this be treated?" Qi Bo said: "The kidney governs yawning; take points on the Foot Shaoyin. the lungs govern sighing; take points on the Hand Taiyin and Foot Shaoyin; for shivering or teeth-chattering, where yin and yang are separated, therefore tonify the Foot Taiyang and drain the Foot Shaoyin; for chills and shaking, tonify all yang meridians; for belching, tonify the Foot Taiyin and Yangming; for sneezing, tonify the Foot Taiyang at meiben (the root of the eyebrows); for drooling, according to its location, tonify in between the muscle layers; for weeping and tears, tonify Tianzhu (the collateral at the back of the neck); "xianghai" refers to the midline of the head; for deep sighing, tonify Hand Shaoyin, Heart (Shen), and Foot Shaoyang, and retain the needle; for drooling of saliva, tonify the Foot Shaoyin; for tinnitus, tonify Kezhuoren (the point at the junction between the nail and flesh of the thumb); for self-biting of the tongue, identify which meridian is primarily involved in the condition and tonify it accordingly. For dizziness and a sensation that the head might tilt forward, tonify below the outer ankle and retain the needle there; for atrophy with cold extremities and a feeling of mental distress, needle two cun above the space between the big toes and retain the needle. Another method says to needle below the outer ankle and retain it there.
