The poem says:
Hearing that double-ornamented phoenix sashes are mentioned, it is not wrong to wear a single piece of 鲛绡. At night, the incense knows for whom it is burned? Longingly gazing at the sinking water and smoke hawks.
Before the wind, her cloud-like hair rolls green; in my thoughts, her jade-like face blushes red. Do not let this pitiable night pass in vain, beneath the moonlight, her twin steps are graceful and charming.
The above is "Xi Jiang Yue" (West River Moon).

It is said that since Pan Jinlian and Chen Jingji had their first success in the 厢房 (xiangfang, side room), the two of them tasted sweetness; they stole moments together during the day and warmed each other at dusk. Sometimes leaning on each other's shoulders and laughing, or sitting side by side to flirt, pinching, pulling, and grabbing—completely without restraint. When they could not speak in front of others, they would write down their thoughts, roll the paper into a strip, and drop it on the ground; you passed messages to me, I passed messages to you. One day, on a April day, Pan Jinlian wrapped a silver-threaded sweatband from her own sleeve with a gauze sachet inside, which contained a strand of hair and some pine needles; she sealed it properly to give to Jingji. Unbeknownst to her, Jingji was not in the 厢房 (xiangfáng, side room), so she threw it through the window opening. Later, when Jingji entered the room and saw that it was sealed very tightly, he opened it to find a sweatband sachet. On the paper inside was written a verse titled "Jishengcao" (Parasitic Grass):
I send him this silver-threaded handkerchief and fragrant sachet. We once tied our black hair together in a vow. The pine needles ask you to always remember me; my tears write words of longing for you. At deep night, the lamp casts a lonely shadow of me—do not betray the silent waiting beneath the tea vine trellis at midnight.

Jingji saw in the verse that she had arranged to meet him under the tea vine trellis for a secret rendezvous. He immediately sealed an Xiangfei brush gold fan, also wrote a verse on it as a reply, and slipped it into the garden. Unbeknownst to them, Yue Niang was sitting in Jinlian's room. Jingji, without realizing it, walked through the side gate and called out: "My beloved, are you at home or not?" Jinlian heard his voice and, fearing that Yue Niang would overhear and expose the secret, hurriedly pulled aside the curtain and stepped out. She looked at him, waved her hand, and pretended to say: "I thought it was someone else; it's only Uncle Chen looking for my elder sister." "My elder sister just left here and went with them to the garden pavilion to pick flowers." Seeing that Yue Niang was in the room, Jingji secretly handed the item to the woman and tucked it into her sleeve before leaving. Yue Niang then asked: "What did Uncle Chen come for?" Jinlian said, "He came looking for my elder sister; I told him she had gone to the garden." In this way, they deceived Yue Niang. After a short while, Yue Niang got up and went back to the rear part of the house. Jinlian took it out from her sleeve and opened it; it was a golden fan made of Xiangfei bamboo, with a painting of green rush grass and a stream flowing in the background. On it was written a verse of "Shuixianszi" (Water Nymph):
Purple bamboo and white gauze are so carefree; green rush grass is skillfully crafted, with golden hinges and silver coins—truly exquisite. It's suitable for a beauty to use, shading the scorching summer heat while gently fanning the breeze. When among people, keep it tucked in your sleeve; when alone, slowly and lightly fan yourself—do not let vulgar people see and steal it.

The woman, upon reading the verse, on that evening when the moon rose, sent some wine to her two maidservants, Chunmei and Qiuju, so they would be drunk and locked them in the kang room (a heated sleeping chamber) on the other side. Then, at her leisure in the room, she slightly opened the green curtain, lit a high red candle, prepared the bed with quilts and pillows, bathed and perfumed herself, and stood alone beneath the wood-scented trellis, waiting specially for Jingji to come for their tryst. That night, Ximen Dajie happened to be invited by Yue Niang to the back part of the house and went to listen to a nun named Wang recite scriptures; only Yuanxiao was in the room. Jingji secretly gave him a handkerchief and instructed him: "Watch the room for me; I'm going to play chess with your Fifth Madam." "Come quickly when the eldest daughter comes in." Yuanxiao nodded and agreed. Jingji, having succeeded in his plan, came to the garden; he saw moonlight filtering through the flowers, casting uneven shadows. He walked to under the tea vine trellis and saw from afar that the woman had removed her cap, disheveled her black hair in a haphazard way, and was standing quietly alone beneath the wood-scented arbor. Jingji suddenly emerged from under the tea vine trellis, grabbed her with both hands and embraced her. The woman was startled and said, "Hmph! You little short-liver!" Suddenly appearing out of nowhere like that really scared me. If it had been someone else, would you have dared to hug them so boldly?" Jingji, half-drunk and laughing, said: "Even if I had hugged you by mistake for Hongniang, it would have been unavoidable." The two then embraced each other and hand in hand entered the room. Inside the room, the lamps and candles burned brightly; a table was set with wine and delicacies. They shut the side gate from inside, sat shoulder to shoulder, and drank together. The woman then asked: "You came—where is my elder sister?" Jingji said, "My elder sister went to the back part to listen to scriptures being recited. I gave instructions to Yuanxiao; if anything happens he will come here and call me. I just told them I was playing chess here." After saying this, they laughed joyfully together. After drinking for a long time, as the old saying goes: "Romance is brewed in tea; wine is the matchmaker of passion." Soon they were overcome with emotion—bamboo leaves seemed to pierce their hearts and peach blossoms bloomed on their faces. One kissed the other's lips, one smudged the other's cheek with affection. They turned off the lamp and climbed into bed together. There is a short verse titled "Liuniangzi" to attest to this:
As I entered the room, you embraced me in your arms. I spread out the brocade quilt; my charming beloved played with me most mischievously. Ah, lift up my feet. Lifting my feet, you messed up my black hair; my braid became crooked.

Just as the two finished their love-making, they heard Yuanxiao knocking on the door and saying: "The eldest daughter is coming into the room." Jingji hurriedly dressed and left. Indeed:
Wild bees and butterflies appear from time to time, flying into the pear blossoms where they vanish without a trace.

Originally, in Pan Jinlian's three-room upper floor residence, the central room housed a Buddhist statue, while the two side rooms were used for storing medicinal herbs and fragrant spices. From then on, the two became deeply attached to each other; their feelings were as close as glue and lacquer. They met together every day without fail. One day, it was as if fate had arranged for something to happen: early in the morning, Pan Jinlian dressed up and went upstairs to burn incense before the statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Unbeknownst to her, Chen Jingji was just then taking the key upstairs to open the storeroom and take out medicinal herbs and spices. They unexpectedly met face to face. The woman stopped burning incense and, seeing that no one was upstairs, the two embraced each other, kissed passionately, one calling "Dear Fifth Madam," the other exclaiming "My precious darling." They said: "Since there's no one here, let's just do it right now." While undressing each other's pants and clothes, they lay on a spring bench with their shoulders entwined; the male organ was half inserted, and they were deeply entangled in passion. Fate is strange—just as the two were in the midst of their passionate act, Chunmei happened to come upstairs carrying a box to fetch tea leaves and saw them. The two scrambled to cover themselves and were both startled. Chunmei, fearing she would embarrass them, quickly turned around and hurried down the stairs. Jingji was so flustered that he could barely pull up his underclothes, and the woman quickly put on her skirt. She hurriedly called out to Chunmei: "My dear elder sister, come upstairs; I have something to say to you." Chunmei then went upstairs. Jinlian said: "My dear elder sister, your brother-in-law is no one else; I will now tell you the truth." The two of us are deeply in love and cannot be separated. You must never tell anyone, but keep it hidden in your heart." Chunmei replied: "Madam, why say such things?" "I have served you for these years; how could I not know your innermost thoughts? Would I dare to speak of them to others!" The woman said: "If you are willing to cover for us, while your brother-in-law is here now, come over and sleep with him too; only then will I believe you." "If you refuse, it means you are not kind-hearted toward us." Chunmei's face turned red and pale with embarrassment but had no choice but to obey. She took off her Xiang skirt, unfastened her pants, lay on the bench, and let this young man have his way with her. How outrageous! Indeed: two pearls of immeasurable value, yet how could the young master resist drilling into them? There is a "Hongxiuxie" (Red Embroidered Shoes) verse to attest:
Pretending to be the son-in-law and showing false affection, secretly meeting with the mother-in-law. Human relationships conceal devil's lard. They openly speak of filial propriety, yet secretly form a pair like swallows and orioles; the two are now united.

At that moment, Jingji played with Chunmei to his heart's content, and only then did they all disperse. From then on, Pan Jinlian became close with Chunmei and secretly arranged trysts with this young man, not just for one day, but always keeping it hidden from Qiuju.

On the first day of the sixth month, Grandma Pan passed away due to her old illness; someone came to deliver the news. Wu Yue Niang bought an incense table, three sacrificial offerings and paper money for the dead, and had Jinlian ride in a palanquin to mourn at the gate and perform funeral rites; she went once and returned. The next day, on the third day of the sixth month, Jinlian got up early and sat in Yue Niang's room, chatting for a while before leaving. As she walked along the wall at the courtyard of the main hall, she urgently needed to urinate. She just lifted her skirt and squatted down to urinate. Originally, since Ximen Qing had died, no guests came or went; the main hall and ceremonial gate were usually closed and not opened. Jingji, who was staying in the east 厢房 (xiang fang), had just gotten up when he suddenly heard someone urinating at the wall with a splashing sound. He quietly peered through the window and saw to his surprise that it was her. He said: "Who is this rascal urinating here?" "Did you lift your clothes up, and get your skirt wet?" The woman quickly fastened her skirt and walked to the window, asking: "So you were in your room all along? Just getting up now—how leisurely." "Is my elder sister not in her room?" Jingji replied, "She's at the back; who knows when she'll come out!" "I just went to sleep at three in the morning. Auntie had me drag myself back there to listen to the recitation of 'Hongluo Baojuan' (The Red Silk Sutra); I sat until then, almost breaking my waist from exhaustion, and today I'm so tired I can barely get up." Jinlian said: "You lazy good-for-nothing—don't try to lie and fool me!" "I wasn't at home yesterday, so when were you in the main house listening to scriptures?" "The maid said that you had dinner at Meng San'er's room yesterday." Jingji said, "Thank goodness for my sister watching over us; we were all in the main house. When would we have gone to his room?" As he was speaking, the young man stood on the kang bed and made his penis hard as a stiff rod. He pushed it straight through the window opening. The woman saw it and couldn't stop laughing. She scolded, "You wretched good-for-nothing! Suddenly sticking your father's head out like that—it scared me half to death." "Pull it back in right now, or I'll take a needle and poke you with it—just wait until the pain teaches you a lesson!" Jingji laughed and said, "You old thing, you don't like it when he's erect again. You might as well send him off to a good place; that would be one small act of kindness from you." The woman scolded, "What an incorrigible rascal!" While pretending to adjust her face in front of a small bronze mirror she took out from her waist and placed on the window lattice, she used her red lips to suckle his penis. As she sucked it, this young man felt as if a single drop of spiritual essence had poured into his head, melting waves of springtime desire into his heart. Just as she was in the midst of this pleasurable moment, suddenly she heard footsteps approaching. The woman quickly took down the mirror and moved to one side. Jingji then pulled his penis back inside. To their surprise, it was Lai An'er, a young servant boy, who came over and said: "Fu Dalang is asking in front for Brother-in-law to come eat." Jingji replied, "Tell Fu Dalang to go ahead and eat. I'm still combing my hair; I'll be right there." Lai Aner went back. The woman then quietly said to Jingji, "Tonight don't go anywhere else; stay in the house. I'll have Chunmei call for you." "Wait for me at least; there's something I want to say to you." Jingji said, "I'll follow your orders faithfully." After saying this, the woman went back to her room. Jingji finished combing and washing, then went to his shop to attend to business on his own. No further mention is made of it.

Before long, the day turned to evening. That night, with no moon and many stars shining, the weather was extremely hot. The woman ordered Chunmei to heat up water for a bath and to trim her toenails in her room. She arranged the quilt and pillow on the bed, drove away the mosquitoes, lowered the mosquito net, and lit incense in a small censer. Chunmei then called out: "Madam, today is the first day of Fu (the first ten days of the dog days of summer). Won't you like some hibiscus flowers to dye your fingernails?" "I'll go find some for you." The woman asked, "Where would you go to find them?" Chunmei said: "I have to go all the way over to that big courtyard on the other side. I'll go pluck a few for you." "Madam, please ask Qiujv to get out the pestle and mortar and crush some garlic." The woman leaned in close, whispering to Chunmei: "Go invite your brother-in-law from the 厢房 (xiangfang) over here tonight; I want to talk with him." After Chunmei left, the woman in her room took a long time to bathe and trim her toenails. Soon Chunmei came back with several hibiscus flowers, and it took Qiujv the whole day to crush them. The woman gave them a few cups of wine to drink and sent them off to sleep in the kitchen first. Under the lamplight, the woman dyed her ten fingers with hibiscus. She ordered Chunmei to bring a stool and place it in the courtyard, where she spread out a cool mat, quilt, and pillow for cooling off. It was about the time of the end of the first watch. The red gate stood in silence, and the Jade Rope slowly turned as the stars of Zhuniu (Orion) and Zhiwu (Vega) were separated on either side of the Milky Way. Suddenly, a faint floral fragrance wafted through the air along with the flickering glow of fireflies. The woman held a silk fan in her hand and lay on the pillow, waiting patiently. Chunmei left the side gate slightly ajar. It was precisely:
Waiting for the moon beneath the western 厢 (xiang), the door is half-open to greet the breeze. The flower shadows beyond the wall stir—could it be a jade-like beauty approaching?

Originally, Jingji had agreed to shake the mujin hua (a type of flower tree) as a signal; thus, he would know when she arrived. The woman saw the swaying shadow of the flowers and knew it was him. She then coughed in the courtyard as a response. He pushed open the door and came in, and the two sat side by side. The woman then asked: "You've come—anyone at home?" Jingji replied, "My elder sister hasn't come out today. I've already instructed Yuanxiaoer to stay in the room and inform me first if anything happens." He then asked: "Has Qiujv gone to sleep?" The woman said, "She's already fast asleep." After saying this, they embraced each other and lay on the bench in the courtyard. Naked, they made love right there on the mat. They were completely entangled in passion. One could see:
Their passions harmonized perfectly; he embraced her fragrant shoulders, pressing his face against her cheeks. His hands fondled her soft and tender breasts—it was truly wondrous! She lifted her feet to remove her embroidered shoes, placing her jade-like body into his arms. Her tongue sent the clove of passion to her lips, parting them as she embraced him in a passionate storm. After their love-making ended like phoenix and 鸾 (luan) clouds dispersing, she entrusted him with these words: "Tomorrow morning, please come early at all costs."

After they had finished their love-making, the woman took out five taels of broken silver and handed it to Jingji. She said: "Your grandmother-in-law outside the gate has died; the coffin was already given by your father when he was alive." "On the third day, during the wrapping of her body for burial, my elder sister-in-law sent me to attend the funeral and burn paper offerings." "Tomorrow is the day of her burial, but my elder sister-in-law won't let me go. She says you are still in mourning for your father and should not leave the house." "I'm giving you these five taels of silver. Tomorrow morning, I beg you to go early and send off your grandmother-in-law at the gate; use this money for the bearers' fee, watch over her burial until she is laid in the ground, then come home." "It should be just like I went with you." Jingji took the silver in one hand and said, "This isn't a problem." "I'll leave home very early tomorrow morning, finish everything quickly, and return to you right away, my dear old lady." After saying this, fearing that his elder sister might come into the room, he left early and returned to the 厢房 (xiangfáng).

No further mention is made of the rest of the night. The next day, he returned home by mealtime. Jinlian had just gotten up and was combing her hair in her room. Jingji came over to report, bringing two jasmine flowers from the Zhaohua Temple outside the gate for the woman to wear. The woman asked: "Has the coffin been buried?" Jingji replied, "How could I possibly neglect my duty? If I hadn't seen to it that the old lady was properly laid in her coffin and placed into the earth with golden offerings, how dare I come back to report?" "There was still two taels and six or seven qian of silver left, which I handed over to your younger sister to keep for her daily expenses." "Many thanks; please convey my gratitude to you again and again." Hearing that his mother had been buried, the woman shed tears. She then called to Chunmei: "Soak the flowers in a cup and bring tea for your brother-in-law." Before long, two small boxes of steamed cakes and four little dishes were brought out. After Jingji had drunk his tea and eaten, he went to the front part of the house. From then on, she became even closer and more intimate with this young man day by day.

One day, on a July morning, the woman made an arrangement with him: "Don't go anywhere today. Wait in your room; I'll come to you and play." Jingji agreed, but unexpectedly that day he was invited by Cui Ben to go out with a few friends beyond the gate for fun. He stayed out all day, got very drunk when he returned home, and fell asleep on the bed without knowing whether it was up or down. In the evening, Jinlian suddenly went to his room and saw him lying straight on the bed. She tried pushing him but couldn't wake him up; she immediately realized he had been drinking somewhere. What was strange, however, was that when the woman touched his sleeve, a golden lotus blossom hairpin with an ornate head fell out. Attached to it were two lines of writing: "Golden bridles echo through fragrant grass; jade towers' inhabitants are drunk beneath apricot blossoms." Looking at it clearly, she recognized it as Meng Yulou's hairpin: "How did this end up in his sleeve?" "It must be that he also has some connection with Yulou." "If not, how could her hairpin end up in his possession?" "No wonder this wretch has been so indifferent and listless around me on several occasions." "If I don't leave him a note, he'll just think I didn't come." "Let me write four lines of poetry on the wall so that he knows." "When I see him, I'll slowly press him for details." With that in mind, she took up a brush and wrote four lines on the wall. The poem reads:
Walking alone in the study, still asleep and not yet awake; in vain did the Lady of Heaven descend from Wuyun. King Xiang was naturally indifferent and unmoved, betraying the feelings that lasted day by day and night by night.

After finishing her writing, the woman returned to her room. Meanwhile, after waking up from a drunken sleep, Jing Ji found the lamp lit in his room. He then recalled that today the woman had come to meet him, but he had been drunk. He turned his head and saw four lines of poetry written on the wall, with fresh ink still wet. After reading them once, he realized she had come but left in vain. He was filled with regret. "It's already the first watch of the night, and Big Sister and Yuanxiao are still not out from behind. If I go to their side now, the side gate is locked." He walked over to under a kudzu bush, shook the branches as a signal, but hearing no movement from inside, he could not help but step on Taihu stones and climb over the whitewashed wall. The woman, seeing that he had drunk and was so drunk as to be unconscious, returned to her room in great anger, her heart full of gloom. She climbed onto the bed without changing clothes and lay there sullenly. Unbeknownst to her, in the middle of the night he climbed over the wall. Seeing no one in the courtyard and guessing that the maids were all asleep, he tiptoed quietly toward her room. Finding the door slightly ajar, he slipped inside. The moonlight through the window revealed a woman lying alone on the bed, facing inward. He whispered softly, "My beloved," but after several calls received no response and said, "Don't blame me; today Brother Cui and his friends invited me to go out for archery at their estate five li outside the gate all day long, and I came home drunk." "I didn't know you had come. I have failed to keep my appointment with you; please forgive me, please forgive me." The woman paid no attention to him at all. Seeing that she ignored him, Jing Ji became flustered and knelt on the ground, repeating his explanation over and over again. The woman turned around and slapped him across the face, scolding, "You wretched, faithless rogue! Don't make so much noise or the maids will hear!" "I know you've found someone else and no longer care for me." "Where exactly did you go today?" Jing Ji said, "I was originally dragged by Brother Cui to shoot arrows outside the gate. I got drunk and fell asleep, missing our appointment. Please don't be angry." "I saw your poem on the wall and knew you were upset with me." The woman said, "You wretched scoundrel! Don't talk nonsense anymore and be quiet!" "Your tricks are as round as mud balls, but I won't let them slip through my fingers." "Even if you were invited by Cui Ben today to drink and came home drunk, where did the hairpin in your sleeve come from?" Jing Ji said, "I picked it up in the garden that day; it's been two or three days now." The woman said, "You still dare to lie and play tricks. Did you really pick it up in the garden?" "Bring me another one like this if you want me to believe you." "This hairpin is the one from Meng Jian'er, that lewd woman. I recognize it for sure; there's even her name engraved on it. Don't try to fool me." She scolded, "The other day when I wasn't around, he invited you to eat in his room. So it turns out the two of you were up to something." "I'm asking you now and you still won't admit it." "If you two aren't involved, how did his hairpin end up in your possession?" "It turns out you told him everything about me. No wonder he smiled at me the other day; there must have been something you said in it." "From now on, you are you and I am I. We're as separate as mung bean skins—please leave!" Hearing this, Jing Ji was so desperate that he swore by the gods and began to weep bitterly. He said, "If I Jing Ji have even a single thread of connection with him, may Lord Dongyue Chenghuang make me die before reaching thirty years old, suffering from a large abscess on my face for three or five years, neither able to get soup nor water." The woman still did not believe him and said, "You scoundrel, the vows you speak are as hollow as toothaches. It's amazing your mouth doesn't rot from it!" The two bickered for a while, and as the night grew late, they had no choice but to undress and lie down on the bed. The woman turned her body away, facing the other direction, pretending not to care about him. No matter how he called her "older sister" this and that, she only slapped his face with a backhand strike. Frightened, Jing Ji dared not even breathe heavily all night long, suffering in silence like someone with dry cholera. As dawn approached, Jing Ji feared the maids would wake up and, as before, climbed over the wall to go back to his room in the front wing. Indeed:
The three lights have shadows, but who can bind them? All things are rootless and arise on their own.
