子鱼名鲋甲。陈人或谓之子鲋,或称孔甲。陈胜既立为王,其妻之父兄往焉。胜以众宾待之,长揖不拜,无加其礼。其妻之父怒曰:“怙乱僭号而傲长者,不能久矣。”不辞而去。陈王跪谢,遂不为顾。王心惭焉,遂适博士太师之馆而言曰:“予虽丈夫哉,然塞于礼义,以启于姻娅,唯先生幸训诲之,使免于戾乎。”子鱼曰:“王所问者、善也。敢固无辞而对乎?今以礼言耶?则礼无不拜,且宗族婚媾,又与众宾异敬者也。敬而加亲,自古以然也。”王曰:“虽已失之于前,庶欲收之于后也。愿先王修明其事,必奉遵焉。”对曰:“昔唐尧内亲九族,外协万邦。礼以婚为昆弟,妻之父母为外舅姑。由是明之,则拜之可知。夫婚亲之义,非宗贤之类也,虽自己臣,莫敢不敬。昔魏信陵君尝以此质臣之父。臣之父曰:‘于诸母之昆弟、妻之诸父,则以亲配德。年齐以上,虽拜之可也。幼于己者、揖之可也。’此出于人情而可常者也。”王曰:“善哉!请问同姓而服不及者、其制何邪?”对曰:“先王制礼,虽国君、有合族之道,宗人掌其列,继之以姓而无别,醊之以食而无殊,各随本属之隆杀、属近则死为之兑,属远则吊之而已。礼之正也。是故臣之家、哭子氏之别姓于弗父之庙,哭孔氏则于夫子之庙。此有据而然也。周之道、虽百世,婚姻不通,重先世之同体也。”王跪曰:“先生之言、厥义博哉!寡人虽固,敢不尽心。”
