异日,平原君会众宾而延子高。平原君曰:“先生、圣人之后也,不远千里来顾临之,欲去。夫公孙子白马之学,今是非未分,而先生翻然欲高逝,可乎?”子高曰:“理之至精者,则自明之。岂在穿之退哉!”平原君曰:“至精之说,可得闻乎?”答曰:“其说皆取之经传,不敢以意。《春秋》记六鶂退飞。覩之则六,察之则鶂。鶂犹马也,六犹白也。覩之则见其白,察之则知其马。色以名别,内由外显。谓之白马,名实当矣。若以丝麻加之女功,为缁素黄,色、名虽殊,其质故一。是以《诗》有素丝,不曰丝素。《礼》有缁布,不曰布缁。●牛玄武、此类甚众。先举其色,后名其质。万物之所同,圣贤之所常也。君子之论,贵当物理,不贵繁辞。若尹文之折齐王之所言,与其法错故也。穿之所说于公孙子,高其智,悦其行也。去白马之说,智行固存。是则穿未失其所师者也。称此云云,没其理矣。是楚王之言楚人亡弓、楚人得之,先君夫子探其本意,欲以示广,其实狭之,故曰不如亦曰人得之而已也。是则异楚王之所谓楚,非异楚王之所谓人也。以此为喻,乃相击切矣。凡言人之者,惣谓人也,亦犹言马者、惣谓马也。楚自国也,白自色也。欲广其人,宜在去楚;欲正名、色,不宜去白。诚察此理,则公孙之辨破矣。”平原君曰:“先生之言,于理善矣。”因顾谓众宾曰:“公孙子能答此乎?”燕客史由对曰:“辞则有焉,理则否矣。”

齐攻赵,围廪丘。赵使孔师五万击之,克齐军,获尸三万。赵王诏勿归其尸,将以困之。子顺聘赵,问王曰:“不归尸,其困何也?”曰:“其父兄、子弟悲苦无已,废其产也。”子顺曰:“非所以穷之也。死、一也。归尸与不归,悲苦胡异焉?以臣愚计,贫齐之术,乃宜归尸。”王曰:“何谓?”对曰:“使其家远来迎尸,不得事农,一费也。归所葬,使其送死终事,二费也。一年之中,丧卒三万,三费也。欲无困贫,不能得已。”王曰:“善。”既而齐大夫闻子顺之谋,曰:“君子之谋、其利博哉!”
