異日,平原君會眾賓而延子高。平原君曰:「先生、聖人之後也,不遠千里來顧臨之,欲去。夫公孫子白馬之學,今是非未分,而先生翻然欲高逝,可乎?」子高曰:「理之至精者,則自明之。豈在穿之退哉!」平原君曰:「至精之說,可得聞乎?」答曰:「其說皆取之經傳,不敢以意。《春秋》記六鶂退飛。覩之則六,察之則鶂。鶂猶馬也,六猶白也。覩之則見其白,察之則知其馬。色以名別,內由外顯。謂之白馬,名實當矣。若以絲麻加之女功,為緇素青黃,色、名雖殊,其質故一。是以《詩》有素絲,不曰絲素。《禮》有緇布,不曰布緇。●牛玄武、此類甚眾。先舉其色,後名其質。萬物之所同,聖賢之所常也。君子之論,貴當物理,不貴繁辭。若尹文之折齊王之所言,與其法錯故也。穿之所說於公孫子,高其智,悅其行也。去白馬之說,智行固存。是則穿未失其所師者也。稱此云云,沒其理矣。是楚王之言楚人亡弓、楚人得之,先君夫子探其本意,欲以示廣,其實狹之,故曰不如亦曰人得之而已也。是則異楚王之所謂楚,非異楚王之所謂人也。以此為喻,乃相擊切矣。凡言人之者,惣謂人也,亦猶言馬者、惣謂馬也。楚自國也,白自色也。欲廣其人,宜在去楚;欲正名、色,不宜去白。誠察此理,則公孫之辨破矣。」平原君曰:「先生之言,於理善矣。」因顧謂眾賓曰:「公孫子能答此乎?」燕客史由對曰:「辭則有焉,理則否矣。」
