子路鼓琴,孔子闻之,谓冉有曰:“甚矣,由之不才也!夫先王之制音也,奏中声以为节,入于南,不归于北。夫南者、生育之乡,北者、杀伐之城。故君子之音,温柔居中,以养生育之气。忧愁之感,不加于心也;暴厉之动,不在于体也。夫然者、乃所谓治安之风也。小人之音则不然,亢丽微末,以象杀伐之气;中和之感,不载于心;温和之动,不存于体。夫然者,乃所以为乱之风。昔者,舜弹五弦之琴,造《南风》之诗,其诗曰:‘南风之薰兮,可以解吾民之愠兮;南风之时兮,可以阜民之财兮。’唯修此化,故其兴也勃焉。德如泉流,至于今,王公大人述而弗忘。殷纣好为北鄙之声,其废也忽焉,至于今,王公大人举以为诫。夫舜起布衣,积德含和,而终以帝。纣为天子,荒淫暴乱,而终以亡。非各所修之致乎?由,今也匹夫之徒,曾无意于先王之制,而习亡国之声,岂能保其六七尺之体哉?”冉有以告子路。子路惧而自悔,静思不食,以至骨立。夫子曰:“过而能改,其进矣乎!”
