| | Lady Feng Zhaoyi of Han was a Zhaoyi rank concubine of Emperor Xiaoyuan, the daughter of General Youjiangluyun Feng Fongshi. In the second year of Emperor Yuan's reign, Lady Zhaoyi was selected into the palace and initially ranked as a "Changshi." After several months, she became a "Meiren," gave birth to a son who later became Prince Xiao of Zhongshan. The "Meiren" rank was then elevated to "Jieyu." During the Jianzhao period, the emperor visited a tiger enclosure for a beast-fighting event, and all of his concubines accompanied him. A bear escaped from the enclosure and climbed onto the railing, attempting to reach the hall. The "Guiren" rank concubines and Lady Fu Zhaoyi were all startled and fled in panic, but Lady Feng Jieyu stood directly in front of the bear. Those on duty then killed the bear. The emperor asked Lady Jieyu, "Human nature is to be startled and afraid; why did you stand in front of the bear?" She replied, "I have heard that fierce beasts stop when they encounter a person. I was afraid it would reach Your Majesty's seat, so I placed myself in its path." Emperor Yuan sighed with admiration and from then on held her in high esteem. Lady Fu Zhaoyi and others all felt ashamed. The following year, when the Prince of Zhongshan was enfeoffed, Lady Jieyu was elevated to Zhaoyi. She followed her son to his fief and became known as Taihou of Zhongshan (Dowager Empress of Zhongshan). The virtuous men said, "Lady Zhaoyi was brave and reverent toward righteousness." "The Book of Songs" says: "The noble's beloved concubine follows the noble on a hunting expedition." The Analects states, "To see righteousness and not act upon it is to lack courage." Lady Zhaoyi embodied both.
