Qi Jiang was a female relative of Duke Huan of Qi and the wife of Duke Wen of Jin. Initially, Duke Wen's father, Duke Xian, took in Li Ji, who slandered and caused the death of the crown prince Shen Sheng. Duke Wen, whose courtesy name was Gongzi Chong'er, fled to Di together with his maternal uncle Fan. When he went to Qi, Duke Huan of Qi gave his female relative as a wife to him and treated him very kindly, giving him twenty sets of horses. He was about to die in Qi, saying: "Life is merely about peace and pleasure; who would know anything else?" Zi Fan, knowing that Duke Wen was content in Qi, wanted to leave but was worried about it. He discussed the matter with his followers under a mulberry tree, where a female servant who raised silkworms was present. The servant informed Jiang Shi, and Qi Jiang killed her, then told the prince: "The followers plan to take you away. I have already dealt with those who heard about it." You must definitely leave; one cannot be divided in purpose, for indecision will not lead to a successful outcome. Since you left Jin, there has been no peaceful year in Jin. Heaven has not yet destroyed Jin; if anyone can restore the state of Jin, it is not you but who else? You must strive hard! "The Supreme Deity watches over you; indecision will surely bring misfortune." The prince said: "If I do not move, I shall certainly die here." Qi Jiang said: "No, that is not possible. The Zhou Shi says: 'Numerous are the travelers on the road; each laments their inability to catch up.' Traveling day and night, one still fears it may be too late; how much more so if you wish for peace and comfort—how will you ever catch up! If a person does not strive to catch up, how can they possibly do so! "Disorder cannot last forever; you will surely reclaim Jin." The prince did not listen.

Qi Jiang and Uncle Fan plotted together. They got the prince drunk, then loaded him onto a carriage to leave. After he sobered up, the prince took up a halberd to chase after Uncle Fan, saying: "If our endeavor succeeds, that is fine; but if it fails, would I ever be satisfied eating your flesh, Uncle?" They then set off and passed through Cao, Song, Zheng, and Chu before entering Qin. Duke Mu of Qin then sent troops to install him in Jin, and the people of Jin killed Duke Huai and enthroned Gongzi Chonger, who became known as Duke Wen. He welcomed Qi Jiang and made her his wife. Thus he became the hegemon of all under heaven, the leader of the feudal lords. The virtuous men said that Qi Jiang was pure and not wanton, and she was able to nurture a gentleman in virtue. The Shi says: "That beautiful Meng Jiang—she is one with whom you may speak in earnest." This is what it refers to.

Eulogy says: "Qi Jiang was upright and just, her words and actions never slackened. She encouraged and advised Duke Wen of Jin to return to the state without hesitation. When the prince did not listen, Qi Jiang conspired with Fan, got him drunk, and loaded him onto a carriage; in the end, she helped establish his hegemony."
