| | Li Ji was a daughter of Li Rong and the wife of Duke Xianggong of Jin. Initially, Duke Xianggong married a woman from Qi and had Qin Mu Fu Ren and Crown Prince Shen Sheng. He also took two women from Rong as wives and had the marquises Chonger and Yiwu. Duke Xianggong attacked Li Rong, conquered it, captured Lady Li Ji and brought her back, and had Xi Qi and Zhuo Zi. Lady Li Ji was favored by Duke Xianggong. After Lady Qi Jiang died, the duke made Lady Li Ji his official wife.

The duke said: "If he is kind to his people but not to his father?" Lady Li Ji said: "Being for the people and being for one's father are different. Killing a ruler to benefit the people—how could any people not support that?" If a father gains favor by benefiting and removes chaos so that the masses are pleased, who would not desire it? Even if he loves you, his desires cannot prevail. "If King Zhou had a good son who first killed Zhou, it would not have highlighted his evil deeds. It would still be an equal death; there would be no need to rely on King Wu of Zhou to abolish his ancestral rites." Since our late lord Duke Wu Gong merged Yi, and the Marquis Mu killed Cheng. These were all for the people without regard for kinship. If you do not plan early, calamity will soon befall you." The duke was frightened and asked: "What can I do?" Lady Li Ji said: "Why doesn't Your Majesty retire and hand over the administration to him. If he gains power and governs, perhaps he will release you?" The duke said: "No, I shall plan for it." From this, the duke became suspicious of Crown Prince Shen Sheng. Lady Li Ji then sent someone to inform Crown Prince Shen Sheng in the duke's name, saying: "The lord had a dream of Lady Qi Jiang; you must hurry and perform sacrifices for her." Shen Sheng performed the sacrifice in Quwo and returned with sacrificial offerings to Jiang. The duke was not at home; Lady Li Ji received the offerings, then placed arsenic in the wine and poisoned the dried meat. When the duke arrived, he summoned Shen Sheng to present the sacrificial meat. Lady Li Ji said: "The food came from outside; it cannot be eaten without testing." She poured the wine on the ground, and the earth swelled. Shen Sheng was frightened and left. Lady Li Ji gave it to a dog; the dog died. She had a minor official drink it, and he also died. Lady Li Ji then looked up to heaven, pressed her chest, and wept. Seeing Shen Sheng, she cried: "Alas! The state is your state; why have you delayed becoming ruler? If you can endure the kindness of a father, how much more so for the people of the state! "To kill one's father to seek benefit—how could anyone possibly support that?" Duke Xianggong sent someone to tell Crown Prince Shen Sheng: "You should plan for it." Tai Fu Li Ke said: "If the crown prince enters and clears his name himself, he can live; otherwise, he cannot survive." The Crown Prince said: "My lord is old. If I enter and clear my name, Lady Li Ji will die, and my lord will not be at peace." Thus he hanged himself in the temple of Xincheng. The duke then killed the junior tutor Du Yuan Kuan. He sent Yan Chu to assassinate Chonger, who fled to Di. He sent Jia Hua to assassinate Yiwu, who fled to Liang. He expelled all the marquises and then established Xi Qi as crown prince.

The Book of Songs says: "A woman with a long tongue is the step to calamity." It also says: "A wise woman can bring down a city." This is what it refers to.
