| | The wife of Liang Hong was Lady Meng, daughter of Meng Shichun from Youfufeng, and a native of the same commandery. She had an ugly appearance, but her moral conduct was very virtuous. Many suitors from the native place sought to marry her, yet she always refused. When she reached thirty years of age, her parents asked what she desired, and she replied, "I wish to have a husband with the integrity of Liang Hong."

時鴻未娶，扶風世家多願妻者，亦不許。聞孟氏女言，遂求納之。孟氏盛飾入門，七日而禮不成。妻跪問曰：「竊聞夫子高義，斥數妻。妾亦已偃蹇數夫。今來而見擇，請問其故。」鴻曰：「吾欲得衣裘褐之人，與共遁世避時。今若衣綺繡，傅黛墨，非鴻所願也。」妻曰：「竊恐夫子不堪。妾幸有隱居之具矣。」乃更麄衣，椎髻而前。鴻喜曰：「如此者，誠鴻妻也。」字之曰德曜，名孟光；自名曰運期，字俟光，共遯逃霸陵山中。 |
| | At that time, Liang Hong had not yet married. Many prominent families from Fufeng wished to give their daughters in marriage to him, but he also refused them all. Upon hearing of Lady Meng's words, he then sought to marry her. Lady Meng entered the household in a lavishly adorned manner, but after seven days, the marriage rites were not completed. The wife knelt and asked, "I have secretly heard of my husband's lofty virtue, yet you have rejected several wives." "I too have been haughty toward many husbands." "Now that I have come and am being chosen, please tell me the reason." Liang Hong said, "I wish to find a woman who is content with plain clothes and coarse garments, one with whom I can retreat from the world and avoid this age. Now that you are dressed in brocade and adorned with makeup, it is not what I desire." The wife said, "I secretly feared my husband would be unable to bear hardship. "I am fortunate enough to have the means for a reclusive life." She then changed into plain clothes, tied her hair in a simple bun, and went forward. Liang Hong was pleased and said, "Now this is truly my wife." He gave her the courtesy name Deyao, and her given name Meng Guang; he named himself Yunqi, with the courtesy name Siguang, and together they fled to live in the mountains of Balingshan.

此時王莽新敗之後也。鴻與妻深隱，耕耘織作，以供衣食；誦書彈琴，忘富貴之樂。後復相將至會稽，賃舂為事。雖雜庸保之中，妻每進食，舉案齊眉，不敢正視。以禮修身，所在敬而慕之。君子謂：「梁鴻妻好道安貧，不汲汲於榮樂。」論語曰：「不義而富且貴，於我如浮雲。」此之謂也。 |
| | At this time it was after Wang Mang's recent defeat. Liang Hong and his wife lived in deep seclusion, tilling the fields and weaving cloth to provide for their clothing and food; they recited books and played the qin, forgetting the pleasures of wealth and rank. lø Later they traveled together to Kuaiji, where he rented a grain mill for work. Although they were among common laborers, whenever his wife served food, she would raise the tray to eye level and dared not look directly at him. By cultivating himself through propriety, he was respected and admired wherever he went. The gentlemen said: "Liang Hong's wife loved the Way and accepted poverty, not eagerly pursuing honor or pleasure." The Analects says: "Wealth and rank acquired through unjust means are to me as passing clouds." This is what it refers to.
