| | The Lady of Lord Lu Gongchengsi was the elder sister of Lord Lu Gongchengpi. When a relative died, she wept for him with great sorrow. Zhipi stopped her and said, "Be calm; I will now marry my elder sister." It was already too late, and Zhipi did not speak of it again.

魯君欲以子皮為相，子皮問姒曰：「魯君欲以我為相，為之乎？」姒曰：「勿為也。」子皮曰：「何也？」姒曰：「夫臨喪而言嫁，一何不習禮也！後過時而不言，一何不達人事也！子內不習禮，而外不達人事，子不可以為相。」子皮曰：「姒欲嫁，何不早言？」姒曰：「婦人之事，唱而後和。吾豈以欲嫁之故數子乎！子誠不習於禮，不達於人事。以此相一國，據大眾，何以理之！譬猶揜目而別黑白也。揜目而別黑白，猶無患也。不達人事而相國，非有天咎，必有人禍。子其勿為也。」 |
| | Lord Lu wanted to appoint Zhipi as his prime minister, and Zhipi asked Lady Si, "Lord Lu wants to appoint me as the prime minister. Shall I accept it?" Lady Si said, "Do not accept it." Zhipi asked, "Why?" Lady Si said, "To speak of marriage while attending a funeral—how unaccustomed to propriety you are!" "To remain silent after it was too late, how unperceptive about human affairs you are!" "With your inner lack of familiarity with propriety and outer failure to understand human affairs, you cannot serve as a prime minister." Zhipi said, "If Lady Si wishes to marry, why did she not speak up earlier?" Lady Si said, "A woman's matter must be initiated before a response is given. How could I bring up the matter of my desire to marry and trouble you repeatedly!" "You truly are unfamiliar with propriety, and unperceptive about human affairs." "With such qualities as a prime minister for an entire state, entrusted to the people—how could you govern them!" It is like covering one's eyes and trying to distinguish black from white. Covering one's eyes while distinguishing between black and white, at least brings no harm. "To be a prime minister without understanding human affairs will bring either heavenly calamity or human disaster." "You had better not accept it."

子皮不聽，卒受為相。居未期年，果誅而死。君子謂，公乘姒緣事而知弟之遇禍也，可謂智矣。待禮然後動，不苟觸情可謂貞矣。《》云：「蘀兮蘀兮，風其吹汝，叔兮伯兮，唱予和汝。」又曰：「」此之謂也。 |
| | Zhipi did not listen, and eventually accepted the position as prime minister. He had not yet served for a full year when he was indeed executed and died. The gentlemen said that Lady Gongcheng Si, through this matter, understood her younger brother's impending disaster; she could truly be called wise. She waited for propriety before acting and did not recklessly give in to emotion; this can be considered virtue. The "Poem" says: "Shi xi shi xi, the wind blows you; Shu xi bo xi, I sing and you harmonize." It also says: "All your thoughts are not as good as what I pursue." This is what it means.

| | Eulogy says: Zhipi's elder sister, through this matter discerned the situation. When Zhipi became prime minister of Lu, she knew his disaster would arise. Her elder sister advised Zhipi; it was almost as if she should have stopped him. But Zhipi did not listen and eventually brought disgrace to his family.
