| | Jie Fu was the wife of Lu Qiuhu. Five days after marrying her, he left to serve as an official in Chen and returned only five years later. Before reaching his home, he saw a woman picking mulberry leaves by the roadside. Qiuhu was pleased with her and got out of his carriage to say, "Since you are picking mulberry leaves in the sun, I have traveled far on my journey and would like to take shelter under your mulberry tree for a meal; please allow me to rest here." The woman continued picking mulberry leaves without stopping. Qiuhu said, "Working the fields is not as good as encountering a bountiful year, and working with mulberry trees is not as good as meeting a national official." "I have some gold," he said, "and I wish to give it to you, Madam." The woman said, "Ah!" "Picking mulberry leaves and working hard, spinning and weaving cloth are what provide clothing and food, support my parents-in-law, and raise my husband." "I do not wish for gold. What I desire is that you have no thoughts outside our marriage, and I also have no intention of immoral behavior. Take back your food and the basket of gold." Qiuhu then left.

| | When he arrived home, he presented the gold to his mother and sent someone to call his wife. To his surprise, it was the woman who had been picking mulberry leaves earlier; Qiuhu felt ashamed. The wife said, "You combed your hair and cultivated yourself, bid farewell to your parents to go into officialdom, and returned after five years. If you had someone you were pleased with, you would have hurriedly galloped forward, raising dust as you arrived quickly." "But now you were pleased with a woman by the roadside, took off your belongings, and gave her gold; this is forgetting your mother." "Forgetting one's mother is unfilial. Liking beauty and engaging in immoral behavior is a corrupt conduct, and corrupt conduct is unjust." "If one does not show filial piety to his parents, he will not be loyal to his ruler." "If one is unjust in managing his household, then he cannot properly govern as an official." "With both filial piety and righteousness lost, you will surely not succeed." "I cannot bear to see this; you should remarry. I shall never marry again." She then left and ran eastward, threw herself into the river, and died. The gentlemen said: "Jie Fu was precise in her virtue." "There is no greater unfilial piety than not loving one's own parents but loving another person; Qiuhu indeed had this." The gentlemen said: "When seeing virtue, pursue it as if you cannot reach it soon enough. When encountering wickedness, avoid it as one would avoid reaching into boiling water." "This is what was meant by the wife of Qiuhu." The Book of Songs says: "It is this narrow-mindedness that makes it a reproach." This is what is meant by that.

| | Ode: Qiuhu went west to serve as an official, and returned only after five years. He met his wife but did not recognize her, and harbored lustful thoughts. His wife remained steadfast without any wavering; upon returning home they recognized each other. Ashamed of her husband's lack of righteousness, she went eastward and threw herself into the river.
