齊靈仲子者，宋侯之女，齊靈公之夫人也。初，靈公娶於魯聲姬，生子光，以為太子。夫人仲子，與其娣戎子，皆嬖於公。仲子生子牙，戎子請以牙為太子代光，公許之。仲子曰：「不可。夫廢常，不祥；聞諸侯之難，失謀。夫光之立也，列於諸侯矣。今無故而廢之，是專絀諸侯，而以難犯不祥也。君心悔之。」「在我而已。」仲子曰：「妾非讓也，誠禍之萌也。」以死爭之，公終不聽，遂逐太子光，而立牙為太子，高厚為傅。 |
| | Qi Lingzhongzi was a daughter of Song Hou and the wife of Duke Ling of Qi. Initially, Duke Ling married Lady Shengji from Lu, who bore him a son named Guang, whom he designated as crown prince. Lady Zhongzi and her younger sister-in-law Rongzi were both favored by the duke. Zhongzi bore a son named Yayu, and Rongzi requested that Yayu be made crown prince in place of Guang. The duke agreed to this request. Lady Zhongzi said, "No." To discard the established norm is an ill omen; I have heard of difficulties among the feudal lords caused by loss of strategy. The establishment of Guang as heir has already been announced to the feudal lords. To now depose him without cause would be to arbitrarily disgrace the feudal lords and invite misfortune through hardship. "Your lordship will regret this." "It is entirely up to me." Lady Zhongzi said, "I am not merely yielding; it is truly the budding of calamity." She contended for Guang's position to the point of threatening death, but the duke ultimately did not listen. He then expelled Crown Prince Guang and established Yayu as crown prince, appointing Gao Hou as his tutor.

靈公疾，高厚微迎光。及公薨，崔杼立光而殺高厚。以不用仲子之言，禍至於此。君子謂仲子明於事理。《》云：「」仲子之謂也。 |
| | Duke Ling fell ill, and Gao Hou secretly welcomed Guang. When the duke died, Cui Zhu established Guang as ruler and killed Gao Hou. This calamity came about because he did not heed Lady Zhongzi's advice. The gentlemen considered Lady Zhongzi to be wise in understanding affairs and principles. "The Book of Songs" says: "If you listen to my counsel, perhaps there will be no great regret." This refers to Lady Zhongzi.

| | Ode: Lady Zhongzi of Qi Ling, kind and wise with clear discernment. Duke Ling established Yayu, deposed Crown Prince Guang the son of Ji. Lady Zhongzi strongly advised against it; abandoning the legitimate heir brought ill omen. The duke did not listen, and indeed calamity followed.
