Lady Xu Mu was a daughter of Duke Yi of Wei and the wife of Duke Mu of Xu. Initially, Xu requested her hand in marriage, and Qi also requested her. Duke Yi was about to grant the request, but the princess, through her nursemaid, said: "In ancient times, when a feudal lord had a daughter, it was for the purpose of being used as an offering or token, to establish connections with a major state." She said that now Xu is small and distant, while Qi is powerful and nearby. "In this age," she continued, "the strong are the dominant ones." "If there should be bandits or enemies at our borders, and we must seek aid from a great state because of this situation in the four directions, would it not be better to have me here?" "Now we are abandoning what is near for something distant, leaving the great to attach ourselves to the small. If suddenly there arises a crisis that threatens our state, who can be relied upon to safeguard the nation?" Duke Wei did not listen and married her off to Xu.

Later, the Di people attacked Wei, thoroughly defeating them, and Xu was unable to come to their rescue. Duke Wei then fled across the river and went south to Chuqiu. Duke Huan of Qi went there to save them, and thus a city was built at Chuqiu for their residence. At this point, Duke Wei regretted not following her advice. At the time of defeat, Lady Xu hurried to console and mourn for Duke Wei. Because of this, Duke Wei became resentful toward her, and composed a poem saying: "Rushing forward in haste, I return to console Duke Wei; driving my horse on endlessly, I arrive at Cao. The officials struggle through hardships, which fills my heart with sorrow. Since you do not commend me, I cannot turn back. Seeing your misfortune, how could my thoughts be far away?" The virtuous men praised her for her kindness and wisdom.

Eulogy says: Before the Wei princess was married, she considered Xu and Qi. The girl advised her mother that Qi is powerful enough to rely on. Duke Wei did not listen; later he indeed fled in escape, and Xu could not rescue him. Thus, the lady composed "Zai Chi."
