King Wu asked Tai Gong, "If I lead troops deep into the territory of feudal lords and encounter a large forest, with the enemy and I facing each other in opposite parts of the forest. I wish to defend so as to be secure, and to fight so as to win. What should I do?"
Tai Gong said, "Divide my three armies into wedge formations. Place them in convenient positions. Use crossbows and bows as the outer layer, and halberds and shields as the inner layer. Cut down grass and trees to widen our path as much as possible, so as to facilitate the battlefield. Raise banners high, and strictly command my three armies not to let the enemy know our intentions; this is called fighting in a forest. The method of fighting in a forest is for us to lead with spears and halberds, forming ranks together. When the trees in the forest are sparse, use cavalry as auxiliary forces; place war chariots at the front. Fight when advantageous, and halt when not. When there are many dangers and obstacles in the forest, it is essential to deploy wedge formations to guard both front and rear. If my three armies fight fiercely, even though the enemy may be numerous, their general can be driven away. Alternate between fighting and resting, with each unit following its designated order; this is called the discipline of forest warfare."
