高皇帝母曰劉媼,嘗息大澤之陂,夢與神遇。是時雷電晦冥,蛟龍在上。及生而有美。性好用酒,嘗從王媼、武負貰酒,飲醉止臥,媼、負見其身常有神怪。留飲醉,酒售數倍。後行澤中,手斬大虵,一嫗當道而哭云:「赤帝子殺吾子。」此驗既著聞矣。秦始皇帝常曰:「東南有天子氣。」於是東遊以厭當之。高祖之氣也,與呂后隱於芒、碭山澤間。呂后與人求之,見其上常有氣直起,往求,輒得其處。後與項羽約,先入秦關王之。高祖先至,項羽怨恨。范增曰:「吾令人望其氣,氣皆為龍,成五采。此皆天子之氣也,急擊之。」高祖往謝項羽,羽與亞父謀殺高祖,使項莊拔劍起舞。項伯知之,因與項莊俱起,劍加高祖之上,項伯輒以身覆高祖之身,劍遂不得下,殺勢不得成。會有張良、樊噲之救,卒得免脫,遂王天下。初妊身,有蛟龍之神;既生,酒舍見雲氣之怪;夜行斬虵,虵嫗悲哭;始皇、呂后望見光氣;項羽謀殺,項伯為蔽,謀遂不成,遭得良、噲,蓋富貴之驗,氣見而物應,人助輔援也。

曼都好道學仙,委家亡去,三年而返。家問其狀,曼都曰:「去時不能自知,忽見若臥形,有仙人數人,將我上天,離月數里而止。見月上下幽冥,幽冥不知東西。居月之旁,其寒悽愴。口饑欲食,仙人輒飲我以流霞一杯。飲一杯,數月不饑。不知去幾何年月,不知以何為過,忽然若臥,復下至此。」河東號之曰斥仙。實論者聞之,乃知不然。
Daoxu:
Xiang Man Du was a follower of Dao and a student of spiritism. He abandoned his family, and went away. When after three years absence he came back, his people asked him, what had happened to him. Xiang Man Du replied "I have no clear recollection of my departure, but I suddenly found myself as if lying down. Several genii appeared, who took me up to heaven, until we were at some few Li's distance from the moon. I saw that above and beneath the moon all was dark, so that I could not distinguish East and West. Where we stopped near the moon, it was bitter cold. I felt hungry, and wished to eat, when a genius gave me a cupful of morning-red to drink. After having taken one cup, one does not feel hunger for several months. I do not know, how many years or months I stayed there, nor what fault I committed, for suddenly I found myself asleep again, and brought down to this place." The Hedong people gave him the surname of "Fallen Angel." But dealing thoroughly with the subject, we find that this story is impossible.

《傳》語曰:「紂沉湎於酒,以糟為丘,以酒為池,牛飲者三千人,為長夜之飲,亡其甲子。」夫紂雖嗜酒,亦欲以為樂。令酒池在中庭乎?則不當言為長夜之飲。坐在深室之中,閉窗舉燭,故曰長夜。令坐於室乎?當飲者,起之中庭,乃復還坐,則是煩苦相踖藉,不能甚樂。令池在深室之中,則三千人宜臨池坐。前俛飲池酒,仰食肴膳,倡樂在前,乃為樂耳。如審臨池而坐,則前飲害於肴膳,倡樂之作,不得在前。

問曰:「說一經之儒,可謂有力者?」曰:非有力者也。陳留龐少都薦諸生之吏,常曰:「王甲某子,才能百人。」太守非其能,不荅。少都更曰:「言之尚少。王甲某子,才能百萬人。」太守怒曰:「親吏妄言!」少都曰:「文吏不通一經一文,不調師一言;諸生能說百萬章句,非才知百萬人乎?」太守無以應。夫少都之言,實也,然猶未也。何則?諸生能傳百萬言,不能覽古今,守信師法,雖辭說多,終不為博。殷、周以前,頗載六經,儒生所不能說也。秦、漢之事,儒生不見,力劣不能覽也。周監二代,漢監周、秦,周、秦以來,儒生不知,漢欲觀覽,儒生無力。使儒生博觀覽,則為文儒。文儒者,力多於儒生。如少都之言,文儒才能千萬人矣。

高祖讀陸賈之書,歎稱萬歲;徐樂、主父偃上䟽,徵拜郎中,方今未聞。膳無苦酸之肴,口所不甘味,手不舉以啖人。詔書下,文義經傳四科,詔書斐然,郁郁好文之明驗也。上書不實核,著書無義指,「萬歲」之聲,「徵拜」之恩,何從發哉?飾面者皆欲為好,而運目者希;文音者皆欲為悲,而驚耳者寡。陸賈之書未奏,徐樂、主父之策未聞,群諸瞽言之徒,言事麤醜,文不美潤,不指所謂,文辭淫滑,不被濤沙之謫,幸矣!焉蒙徵拜為郎中之寵乎?

孝武之時,詔百官對策,董仲舒策文最善。王莽時,使郎吏上奏,劉子駿章尤美。美善不空,才高知深之驗也。《易》曰:「聖人之情見於辭。」文辭美惡,足以觀才。永平中,神雀群集,孝明詔上《爵頌》。百官頌上;文皆比瓦石,唯班固、賈逵、傅毅、楊終、侯諷五頌金玉,孝明覽焉。夫以百官之眾,郎吏非一,唯五人文善,非奇而何?孝武善《子虛》之賦,徵司馬長卿。孝成玩弄眾書之多,善楊子雲,出入遊獵,子雲乘從。使長卿、桓君山、子雲作吏,書所不能盈牘,文所不能成句,則武帝何貪?成帝何欲?故曰:「玩楊子雲之篇,樂於居千石之官;挾桓君山之書,富於積猗頓之財。」韓非之書傳在秦庭,始皇歎曰:「獨不得與此人同時!」陸賈《新語》,奏一篇,高祖左右稱曰萬歲。夫嘆思其人,與喜稱萬歲,豈可空為哉?誠見其美,懽氣發於內也。

子入太廟,事問。不知故問,為人法也。孔子未嘗入廟,廟中禮器,眾多非一,孔子雖聖,何能知之?:「以嘗見,實已知,而復問,為人法?」孔子曰:「疑思問。」疑乃當問邪?實已知,當復問,為人法,孔子知五經,門人從之學,當復行問,以為人法,何故專口授弟子乎?不以已知五經復問為人法,獨以已知太廟復問為人法,聖人用心,何其不一也?以孔子入太廟言之,聖人不能先知,十也。
