舜讓其友石戶之農。石戶之農曰:「棬棬乎后之為人也,葆力之士也。」以舜之德為未至也,於是乎夫負妻妻攜子以入於海,去之終身不反。舜又讓其友北人無擇。北人無擇曰:「異哉后之為人也,居於甽畝之中,而游入於堯之門。不若是而已,又欲以其辱行漫我,我羞之。」而自投於蒼領之淵。湯將伐桀,因卞隨而謀。卞隨辭曰:「非吾事也。」湯曰:「孰可?」卞隨曰:「吾不知也。」湯又因務光而謀。務光曰:「非吾事也。」湯曰:「孰可?」務光曰:「吾不知也。」湯曰:「伊尹何如?」務光曰:「彊力忍詬,吾不知其他也。」湯遂與伊尹謀夏伐桀,克之,以讓卞隨。卞隨辭曰:「后之伐桀也,謀乎我,必以我為賊也。勝桀而讓我,必以我為貪也。吾生乎亂世,而無道之人再來詬我,吾不忍數聞也。」乃自投於潁水而死。湯又讓於務光曰:「智者謀之,武者遂之,仁者居之,古之道也。吾子胡不位之?請相吾子。」務光辭曰:「廢上,非義也。殺民,非仁也。人犯其難,我享其利,非廉也。吾聞之:『非其義,不受其利;無道之世,不踐其土』,況於尊我乎?吾不忍久見也。」乃負石而沈於募水。故如石戶之農、北人無擇、卞隨、務光者,其視天下若六合之外,人之所不能察;其視富貴也,苟可得已,則必不之賴;高節厲行,獨樂其意,而物莫之害;不漫於利,不牽於埶,而羞居濁世;惟此四士者之節。若夫舜、湯,則苞裹覆容,緣不得已而動,因時而為,以愛利為本,以萬民為義。譬之若釣者,魚有小大,餌有宜適,羽有動靜。
