季冬之月：日在婺女，昏婁中，旦氐中。其日壬癸。其帝顓頊。其神玄冥。其蟲介。其音羽。律中大呂。其數六。其味鹹。其臭朽。其祀行。祭先腎。鴈北鄉。鵲始巢。雉雊雞乳。天子居玄堂右個，乘玄輅，駕鐵驪，載玄旂，衣黑衣，服玄玉，食黍與彘。其器宏以弇。命有司大儺，旁磔，出土牛，以送寒氣。征鳥厲疾。乃畢行山川之祀，及帝之大臣、天地之神祇。 |
| | In the last month of winter: the sun is in Wu Nü, at dusk 娄 (Lou) is central, and at dawn Di is central. The days belong to Ren and Gui. His emperor is Zhuanxu. His deity is Xuanming. Its creature is Jie (the shelled). Its tone is Yu. The pitch-pipes correspond to Dalv. Its number is six. Its flavor is salty. Its smell is that of decay. Its worship is for travel or movement. Offer sacrifices to the kidneys first. Geese face northward. Magpies begin to build nests. Pheasants call, and hens begin to brood. The Son of Heaven resides in the Youge chamber of the Xuantang, rides in a xuanlu carriage, is drawn by black mares with white manes, carries a banner with a black design, wears black robes, adorns himself with heanous black jade pendants, and eats millet and pork. Its vessels are broad and deep. Order the officials to perform a grand Nuo ritual, execute criminals on all sides, bring out the earth oxen, in order to send off the cold air. The birds of prey become fierce and active. Then complete the sacrifices to the mountains and rivers, as well as to the great ministers of the emperor and the deities of heaven and earth.

是月也，命漁師始漁，天子親往。乃嘗魚，先薦寢廟。冰方盛，水澤復，命取冰。冰已入，令告民，出五種。命司農，計耦耕事，修耒耜，具田器。命樂師，大合吹而罷。乃命四監，收秩薪柴，以供寢廟及百祀之薪燎。 |
| | In this month, order the fishery officials to begin fishing, and the Son of Heaven personally goes there. He then tastes the fish, offering them first at the ancestral temple. The ice is at its peak thickness; the waters and marshes freeze over. Order the collection of ice. Once the ice has been stored, issue orders to the people, instructing them to sow the five grains. Order the Minister of Agriculture to calculate paired plowing operations, repair hoes and plows, and prepare farming tools. Order the music masters to hold a grand ensemble performance and then disband. Then order the four supervisors to collect firewood and kindling, in order to supply the ancestral temple and all sacrificial ceremonies with fuel for burning.

是月也，日窮於次，月窮於紀，星迴於天，數將幾終，歲將更始。專於農民，無有所使。天子乃與卿大夫飭國典，論時令，以待來歲之宜。乃命太史，次諸侯之列，賦之犧牲，以供皇天上帝社稷之享。乃命同姓之國，供寢廟之芻豢。令宰歷卿大夫至于庶民土田之數，而賦之犧牲，以供山林名川之祀。凡在天下九州之民者，無不咸獻其力，以供皇天上帝社稷寢廟山林名川之祀。 |
| | In this month, the sun reaches the end of its cycle, the moon completes its period, the stars return to their positions in the sky, numbers approach their conclusion, and the year is about to begin anew. Focus on the farmers, do not assign them any tasks. The Son of Heaven then assembles with his high officials and ministers to review the state's regulations, discuss seasonal decrees, in preparation for what is suitable in the coming year. Then order the Grand Historian to arrange the list of feudal lords, assign them sacrificial animals, in order to provide offerings for the worship of the Supreme Deity and the state altars. Then order the feudal states with the same surname to supply fodder and livestock for the ancestral temple. Order the chief minister to record, from the high officials and ministers down to the common people, the number of land holdings, and assign sacrificial animals accordingly, in order to provide for the sacrifices at famous mountains and rivers. All the people throughout the nine provinces of the realm must contribute their strength without exception, to provide sacrifices for the worship of the Supreme Heaven and Earth Deities, the state altars, ancestral temples, famous mountains, and renowned rivers.

行之是令，此謂一終，三旬二日。季冬行秋令，則白露蚤降，介蟲為妖，四鄰入保。行春令，則胎夭多傷，國多固疾，命之曰逆。行夏令，則水潦敗國，時雪不降，冰凍消釋。 |
| | Implementing these decrees completes one cycle, lasting thirty-two days. If the commands of autumn are carried out in the last month of winter, then white dew will fall early, shelled creatures become portents of disaster, and neighboring states will enter into defense. If the commands of spring are carried out in this month, then embryos and young animals will die or be injured in large numbers, the country will suffer from chronic diseases, and such an action is called "contrary" (Ni). If the commands of summer are carried out in this month, floods will damage the country, timely snow will not fall, and ice will melt prematurely.
