Its vessels are broad and deep. The Son of Heaven issued an order to the officials: "Do not engage in earthworks, do not disturb what is covered and stored, and do not mobilize large crowds, so as to consolidate and maintain closure." Disturbing what is buried and mobilizing the masses will cause the earth's qi to escape, which is called opening the chambers of heaven and earth. The hibernating creatures will then die, the people will suffer more from epidemics, and misfortunes will follow, which is why this month is named Changyue.

Restrict women's affairs, do not allow indulgence; even if there are noble relatives or those close to the court, none shall be exempt from prohibition. He then commands the Daqiu (chief brewer), instructing that millet and rice must be complete, fermentation agents used at the proper time, brewing ingredients thoroughly clean, water sources fragrant, pottery vessels of good quality, fire regulation precise; all six elements must be combined. The Daqiu oversees this process to ensure there is no error or deviation. 仲冬行夏令,則其國乃旱,氣霧冥冥,雷乃發聲。行秋令,則天時雨汁,瓜瓠不成,國有大兵。行春令,則蟲螟為敗,水泉減竭,民多疾癘。 |
| | If mid-winter follows summer commands, then the country will suffer from drought; the air becomes misty and dark, and thunder begins to sound. If mid-winter follows autumn commands, then timely rains will fall as liquid, melons and gourds will not mature, and the country will face a great military conflict. If mid-winter follows spring commands, then pests such as chongming will cause destruction, water springs will diminish and dry up, and the people will suffer from many diseases and plagues.
