端,体之无序而最前者也。毕云:“序,言次序。《说文》云‘专,物初生之题也’。”张云:“无序,谓无与为次序。”王引之云:“‘序’当为‘厚’,《经说上》云‘端。仳:两有端而后可。次:无厚而后可。’是其证也。无厚者,不厚也。训端以无厚者,凡物之见端其形皆甚微也。‘厚’与‘序’隶书相似而误,说见非攻下篇。”陈云:“说云‘端,是无同也’。西。体之无序,即西法所谓线也。序如东序西序之序,犹言两旁也。几何原本云‘线有长无广’,无广是无两旁也,又云‘线之界是点’,点是线之尽处,是最前也。又云‘直线止有两端,两端之间上下更无一点’,是无同也。”案:诸说不同,王说义据最精,而与说不甚相应。《经说下》“仳:两有端而后可”二句,则非此经之说,无从质定。依毕、张说,则“序”当为“叙”之假字。谓端最在前,无与相次叙者。故说云“端是无同也”,似与说义尤合。《鲁胜墨辩叙》云“名必有分,明分明莫如有无,故有无序之辩”,盖即指此文。是晋时所传墨子亦作“无序。”两义未知孰是,姑并存之。陈以点释端,甚精,而训序为旁,则亦未得其义。
