志不强者智不达,言不信者行不果。毕云:“文选注云:‘许君注淮南子云:果,成也。’”据财不能以分人者,不足与友;守道不笃、遍物不博、俞云:“遍,亦辩也。《·。物言遍,是非言辩,文异而义同。”辩是非不察者,不足与游。本不固者末必几,毕云:“《广雅》云:‘几,微也。’或‘●’字之假音,《说文》云:‘𥝌,木之曲头,止不能上也’。”王云:“《尔雅》‘几,危也’,言木本不固者,其末必危也。毕引广雅‘几,微也’,已非塙诂,又引说文,以‘几’作为‘●’,则失之愈远矣。”雄而不修者毕云:“雄犹勇”。其后必惰,原浊者流不清,行不信者名必秏。毕云:“旧从‘耒’,非。《玉篇》云‘秏,可到切,减也,败也。’《》云‘秏斁下士’。”又云:“耗,正作秏。”名不徒生,而誉不自长,功成名遂,名誉不可虚假,反之身者也。务言而缓行,虽辩必不听;多力而伐功,虽劳必不图。苏云:“图,谋也。《春秋传》曰:‘劳之不图,报于何有’。”慧者心辩而不繁说,多力而不伐功,此以名誉扬天下,言无务为多而务为智,无务为文而务为察。故彼智无察,毕云:“‘彼’当为‘非’。”在身而情,当为“惰”,形近而误,上云“雄而不修者,其后必惰。”反其路者也。“路”当为“务”,即冢上“务为智”、“务为察”而言,谓违反其所当务之事。《明鬼下》篇云:“今执无鬼者曰,鬼神者固无有,则此反圣王之务”,此义与彼同。毕读“在身而情,反其路者也”九字句,云“言非智无察,则所欲反其道。《说文》云:‘情,人之阴气有欲者’”,失之。善无主于心者不留,行莫辩于身者不立。名不可简而成也,誉不可巧而立也,君子以身戴行者也。戴、载古通,《春秋隐十年经》“伐戴”,《谷梁》作“伐载”。《释名·释姿容》云:“戴,载也。思利寻焉,仪礼有司彻,贾公彦疏引服虔左传注云:“寻之言重也,温也。”毕云:“寻,习”。忘名忽焉,可以为士于天下者,未尝有也。
