孔子至齊郭門之外,遇一嬰兒挈一壺,相與俱行,其視精,其心正,其行端,孔子謂御曰:「趣驅之,趣驅之。」韶樂方作,孔子至彼,聞韶三月不知肉味。故樂非獨以自樂也,又以樂人;非獨以自正也,又以正人矣哉!於此樂者,不圖為樂至於此。黃帝詔伶倫作為音律,伶倫自大夏之西,乃之崙之陰,取竹於嶰谷,以生竅厚薄均者,斷兩節間,其長九寸而吹之,以為黃鐘之宮,日含少次,制十二管,以崙之下,聽鳳之鳴,以別十二律,其雄鳴為六,雌鳴亦六,以比黃鐘之宮,適合黃鐘之宮,皆可生之,而律之本也。故曰黃鐘微而均,鮮全而不傷,其為宮獨尊,象大聖之德,可以明至賢之功,故奉而薦之于宗廟,以歌迎功德,世世不忘。是故黃鐘生林鐘,林鐘生大呂,大呂生夷則,夷則生太簇,太簇生南呂,南呂生夾鐘,夾鐘生無射,無射生姑洗,姑洗生應鐘,應鐘生蕤賓。三分所生,益之以一分以上生;三分所生,去其一分以下生。黃鐘、大呂、太簇、夾鐘、姑洗、仲呂、蕤賓為上,林鐘、夷則、南呂、無射、應鐘為下。大聖至治之世,天地之氣,合以生風,日至則日行其風以生十二律,故仲冬短至則生黃鐘,季冬生大呂,孟春生太簇,仲春生夾鐘,季春生姑洗,孟夏生仲呂,仲夏生蕤賓,季夏生林鐘,孟秋生夷則,仲秋生南呂,季秋生無射,孟冬生應鐘。天地之風氣正,十二律至也。

楚威王問於宋玉曰:「先生其有遺行耶?何士民眾庶不譽之甚也?」宋玉對曰:「唯,然有之,願大王寬其罪,使得畢其辭。客有歌於郢中者,其始曰下里巴人,國中屬而和者數千人,其為陽陵採薇,國中屬而和者數百人;其為陽春白雪,國中屬而和者,數十人而已也;引商刻角,雜以流徵,國中屬而和者,不過數人。是其曲彌高者,其和彌寡。故鳥有鳳而魚有鯨,鳳鳥上擊于九千里,絕畜雲,負蒼天,翱翔乎窈冥之上,夫糞田之鴳,豈能與之斷天地之高哉!鯨魚朝發崙之墟,暴鬐於碣石,暮宿於孟諸,夫尺澤之鯢,豈能與之量江海之大哉?故非獨鳥有鳳而魚有鯨也,士亦有之。夫聖人之瑰意奇行,超然獨處;世俗之民,又安知臣之所為哉!」

夏將衰也,二龍戰於庭,吐漦而去。夏王櫝而藏之。夏亡,傳於殷;殷亡,傳於周,皆莫之發。至幽王之時,發而視之,漦流于庭,化為玄黿,走入後宮,與婦人交,遂生褒姒。褒姒歸周,厲王惑亂,國遂滅亡。幽、厲王之去夏世,以為千數歲,二龍戰時,幽、厲、褒姒等未為人也。周亡之妖,已出久矣。妖出,禍安得不就?瑞見,福安得不至?若二龍戰時言曰:「余褒之二君也。」是則褒姒當生之驗也。龍稱褒,褒姒不得不生,生則厲王不得不惡,惡則國不得不亡。徵已見,雖五聖十賢相與郤之,終不能消。善惡同實:善祥出,國必興;惡祥見,朝必亡。謂惡異可以善行除,是謂善瑞可以惡政滅也。河源出於崙,其流播於九河。使堯、禹郤以善政,終不能還者,水勢當然,人事不能禁也。河源不可禁,二龍不可除,則桑穀不可郤也。

15 道虛:
天之與地皆體也,地無下,則天無上矣。天無上,升之路何如?穿天之體,人力不能入。如天之門在西北,升天之人,宜從崙上。淮南之國,在地東南,如審升天,宜舉家先從崙,乃得其階;如鼓翼邪飛,趨西北之隅,是則淮南王有羽翼也。今不言其從之崙,亦不言其身生羽翼,空言升天,竟虛非實也。
Daoxu:
Heaven and earth are both bodies. As one cannot descend into the earth, one cannot ascend into heaven. Such being the case, where would be a road leading up to heaven? Man is not strong enough to enter and pass through heaven's body. If the gate of heaven is in the North-west, all people rising to heaven must pass by the Kunlun Mountain. The State of Huainan being situated in the South-east of the earth, he must, if he really ascended to heaven, first have gone to Kunlun with all his household, where he would have found an ascent. Provided the Prince of Huainan flew straight across the land to the north-western corner, flapping his wings, then he must have had feathers and wings. But since no mention is made of his passing by the Kunlun, nor of feathers and wings growing out of his body, the mere assertion of his ascension cannot be but wrong and untrue.
